Hey guys ..

Having the amazing Paradigm studio 100's running on an old Yamaha Rxv-2500 120w*7 receiver , everything was running exceptionally great on most movie tracks I throw to this combo ..

Finally , I tried the Jurassic park Trilogy (DTS mastered) on these , with every single part on the movies was pretty good except on these Dinosaur's roaring scenes .. I feel like the sound gets disturbed and somewhat significantly depressed and compressed ..

What's going on ? is this a sign for adding a power amp to my Studios or what ? cool.gif

I shall be telling this with a sigh..
Somewhere ages and ages hence..
Two roads diverged in a wood and I..
I took the one less-travelled by..
And that has made all the difference..

How far away are you seated from the speakers and how loud do you listen? 0db, -10db, -20db?

Yep, sounds like distortion is the problem. In other words, hitting the speakers or amps limits.

The studios if I recall are quite power hungry.. I would imagine it's time to add an amp to them not to mention I'll bet they will sound worlds better.

There is something to be said about the sound comming from a dedicated amplifier over a standard AVR IMO

Thanks guys ..

I usually listen at a level between -20 to -10 db according to the source , at 3 meters apart , which is quite loud enough to shake the walls , and is pretty impressive enough for most movies i watched like (Fast five , dark knight , saving private ryan , avatar , gladiator , ... etc. ) without any distortion and with great dynamic range and clarity ..

I felt these levels of distortion or compression just with movies like (King Kong , Jurassic park ) at the scenes where there is roaring from the dinosaur or the gorilla ..

What ? are these roaring sounds reaching transient power peak levels which my old Yammie isn't capable of producing calmly and clearly .. ??

I feel so .. biggrin.gif

Yep, it definetely sounds like it!...time to invest in a power amp. One of the best investments I made when I ran passive speakers. Check out Emotiva power amps, they are good quality and reasonably priced! smile.gif

Seems i'm gonna invest too .. what about Outlaw amps ?

and i wonder why these sounds especially are pretty demanding for the speakers ? ! smile.gif

They are 8 ohm speakers and really can't take gobs of power so I am not sure more power is the answer, especially at -10MV or less. Try another set of speakers and see if it sounds the same, it could be the recording maybe? I have played with two different sets of Paradigms and both could not play as loud as the specs say, they compressed about 10 dBs lower than max and trying to push them just raised the distortion. These speakers were powered with 400 watt amps and the dealer told him he needed more power and guess what, they had exactly what he needed!

Marantz 7702 Atmos
3 Inuke NU4-6000 amps for all speakers.
Speakers- 7 Behringer B215XL's, 4 212xl's for ceiling speakers.
Front subs 8 SI 18ht ported SLLT powered by Peavy IPR 7500
Rear subs 4 SI 18HT ported SLLT powered by Inuke 6000.

I don't think you're stressing the amp or speakers listening at -10.

I don't have the studio 100's but I do have the Studio 60's and I don't think I've experienced what you describe. I used to own a B&K 507 and now I own the Pioneer Elite SC67, which in some ways seems to sound better to me than the B&K did. I'll have to watch those DVD's again and see if I noitice what you describe. Initiially I'm leaning towards your power source being the issue and not the speakers. Lots of headroom with the Studio 100's.

Are you running them full range or crossed over to a sub?

As the last 2 posters said, what you need is a sub. The receiver is not your problem.

I have Studio 100s and a rxa3010. Bought an Emotiva xpa-2 and have noticed a nice difference in overall sound. Don't know if that would help in your case.

Wow do people really listen at -10 and 0db? That's crazy loud. Would u call that blowing speaker range? When I really wanna turn things up ill crank a movie to -17 but rarely get past that. -15 when I'm jamming music.

Well it is something that is hard to tell which is the exact issue. When you run the power hungry Studio 100s as full range, that can definitely put a strain on a receiver, especially if you listen to them loud. The second issue is as good as the Studio100s are at bass, they are not nearly as good as a sub.

I think most people here watch movies at -10. There's no range where speakers blow up. It all depends on what they can handle.

Do you mean "-10" on your AVR? That doesn't mean anything unless your speaker/AVR combo has been calibrated; and even then we'd need to know what it was calibrated too (THX theater? THX home? Something else)?

Ypao should level match all speakers to the same SPL so 0db would be reference.

That doesn't make 0 any particular reference. That just makes all the speakers the same level at a given listening position. It's a good idea, but "reference" usually refers to one of the two THX standards.

Generally: auto-calibration simply does +db / -db relative to get consistency. I have never seen auto-calibration put all speakers (for example) +6db to get 0 to be reference.

My Harman Kardon from this year (not my current reciever, bought an integra instead)

Level matched every speaker in the listening positon to 85DB.. I was actually quite impressed.
