Wanting to get some speaker selection opinions.

I am getting a sonly STR-DN840 free with my Sony rewards points.

Wanting to get some Standing front speakers with a center speaker. ( I have read that having the same center speaker as the front left and right is good, but wouldn’t the speaker be longer than needed? Is it just good to get a center speaker of the same brand and series?)

A self powered sub woofer.

Looking to get in wall speakers for the two surround speakers (can they be installed in a wall with insulation?) (In wall is at my wife's request)

The room is about 20X15 with the back wall completely open to a dining/kitchen area that extends about another 40 feet.

Use will be Games/Movies/Music

Budget is around 1k up to 1.5 k if it is worth it.

Thanks for any help!

Having 3 of the exact same speaker across the front is optimal if you can do it but not everyone can accomodate 3 upright speakers.

Here is a speaker option that may interest you. 3 of the same speaker using one as a center.

Ascend Acoustics is having a sale on their CMT-340se where they throw in a pair of pedestals which makes them look like tower speakers. Then order s 3rd 340se as your center speaker.

http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cmt340m/cmt340m.html

http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?5388

These are the pedestals
http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/access/spkstnds/pedstlcmt340.html

Pedestals and pair of 340se would run you $568

Additional 340se center is $298. so you'd be around $900 for 3 speakers and 2 stands leaving you $600 for your subwoofer and surrounds. You can probably get in-walls pretty cheap leaving you $450 or more for a sub.

Would these speakers be properly utilized with a STR-DN840?

8ohm speaker with 90db sensitivity. Pretty much any AV receiver should be able to power these speakers. I know nothing about the DN840 as I haven't owned a Sony receiver in a dozen years. since then I've owned Sherwood Newcastle, Denon, Harman Kardon, Yamaha and Onkyo and all would have power these Ascend speakers well.

These speakers have great reviews and seem like a good fit.

However the wife is not crazy about the aesthetics. Really looking for a tower that is black and looks the same from top to bottom (no divide in the middle)

As far as sub woofer I am looking at the Klipsch Reference RW-12d. I can Buy one now and place it near field, if needed I can purchase a 2cd one down the road.

This should leave about 1k for Left, right and center speakers, and perhaps some serviceable in wall surround speakers (monoprice?).

Any suggestions?

Any chance those Polk Audio speakers go on sale new for $399?

I am guessing the speakers listed are roughly the same quality? Just comes down to personal sound preference?

Speakers will be used mostly for Movies and gaming, and maybe 10% music.

Anything should blow away my $150 dollar sound bar :P

As of now leaning towards the polks or the EMPtek the q500 KEF look nice as well....

Probably not new but everyone who has purchased from the Polk Audio ebay site says the speakers come packaged and look brand new so I wouldn't worry about it.

Looks like the Ebay store only has a 2 year warranty? Compared to a 5 year warranty when new.

That's true but is the reason why you get such a great discount. Length of warranty doesn't worry me because I never come close to testing the limits of my speakers.

I buy used speakers with no warranty.

Polk 75T and Tsi500 are basically same speaker with tweeter moved around. Lower end speaker than RTIa7

Not a fan of Klipsch speakers so I'd go with the RTiA7.

Still looking for a good deal on the RTI a7, ( or the a9 if they hit the a7 price)

But new egg is having a sale on the monitor 65t and 25c center. I can get a L/R and a center speaker for under what a RTI a7 costs.

Is the Rti A7 and the CSIa6 combo worth tripple the price?

I think of the lines like
monitor == vhs
rtia == dvd
lsim == blue-ray

so it depends on how details and clear you want the sound to be and how well they fit in your budget. If you can afford rtia you will not be disappointed. If you're coming from the world of home theater in a box. the monitor will be like a gateway drug. You'll see how much better things can be and realize that for a little more they could have been a lot better. So buy once and buy the RTi A line.
