Do you have a Fry's near you? They have the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers at $77 each for the towers, and $77 a pair for the bookshelfs. Pick up the Klipsch RW-12D sub for $299 and that should leave you somewhere around $300-$400 for a budget avr.

My bad, thought he meant 2.1, get a refurb receiver from accessories4less.com, the 1712, then get the full pioneer Andrew jones set with the same sub.

When he goes to Fry's for the speakers, have him look for an avr too.

It's the SP-C22 and lists for $129. I'm guessing Fry's carries it, but I've never seen it advertised. You can buy the complete 5.1 package direct from Pioneer for $550. Heck, if your friend was lazy, and didn't care about chasing after the best possible price, he could one stop shop at Pioneer online and get his complete 5.1 system for his $1k budget.

Are these speakers good enough for movies and music? If he don't like the two surrounds, can he buy for towers for fronts and surrounds?

Have your friend do a search for reviews. He could go with 5 floorstanders if he wants, or 5 bookshelfs. All matching speakers would be ideal.

NHT super zeros and a sub. NHT has a package, but a bigger sub would be better.
Cambridge Audio S30s wit an appropriate sub would be my other suggestions.
The well-liked Klipsch RW-12d would be a good sub choice in this price range.

If he wants 4 towers then have him get the FS52's from Fry's for $77 each. They do sell the center too and he can also buy the SP-C2 center at several other places online. He should be able to get 4 towers and the center for $400 or less total.

Fry's just had the Yamaha RX-V675 and Denon e400 for $299 each. They have good deals on receivers every week. Just look thru the 8 page weekly ad.
http://www.frys.com/ads/page1#AdNavi

And the Klipsch RW-12d sub is great for $299.
