hi all, i was recommended here by fellow head-fi members, as they noted that there was much more discussion about speakers here than over there.

first, some basics: i am still a student, and am looking to get a pair of bookshelf speakers (not too large), which will be hooked up to an amp, which in turn will be connected to my computer.
i was told (and will probably buy in the near future) that the topping TP21 is good for my budget (originally <$100 total) because i wanted to be able to choose between outputting to speakers as well as headphones

i have since then decided to stretch over my budget (maybe spend $50-$70 on speakers to keep me within $150 total for speakers+amp), since it would be near impossible to find decent speakers to pair with the amp for about $30

i am planning on buying used at this point because there would be no way for me to stay within budget otherwise. i will be moving in 7 weeks, but hope for some input now (and also when I am ready to buy), so that I can learn more about the options available to me (as I am completely new to this area of electronics- i was more into and still love building computers)

tl;dr do you have suggestions for used speakers that can be picked up in the $50 range on ebay/craigslist/wherever else? i'm not particularly picky (as i have learned not to be when being in this price range), but i will note that i am not a bass head

edit: i will be moving to manhattan in 7 weeks

Do you have a Fry's near you? If so, look for the Pioneer bs-22 bookshelf speakers. They've been on sale for $77 a pair. A little over budget, but you can't do better for the price.

it would certainly be more helpful if you listed your location...

Start shopping craigs list ---- in 7 weeks. See what is available and check back and ask questions. I'd look for something like Advent II - the so-called 'baby' Advent. There are many good older speakers that are now quite cheap simply because people refuse to believe any speaker 5 years or older are junk. Some of them are and some are not. Learn to tell the difference.

When all else fails - RTFM!

Ebay may not work for you. Shipping could eat up a lot of your money.

The thing is that anything a good value at your budget will probably disappear quickly. So you'll want to check CL a couple of times a day and be ready to pounce. For instance, these could be pretty good:

Not really feasible. There has literally been 1000s of different decent quality speaker models made over the decades....

You may want to keep looking. I have a pair of R15's (by Polk's website their drivers have the same materials and frequency response as the R150). Bought them ~10 years ago on sale for $25 each. They look nice, but their performance matched the price - it was not a "deal." When Polk grew in popularity, they seemed to add cheaper (not the same as less expensive) products for the masses. Back in the 1980's, there were Polk, Boston Acoustic, Advent, Genesis, and Energy trying to make a name for themselves by selling high quality bookshelf speakers at prices the average Joe could afford. Find a pair of those from back in the day and you could be quite happy - older speakers that have not been abused should still sound good. Besides eBay and Craigslist, you might find something at pawn shops.

Good Luck!

edit: is monoprice the best place to buy cheap but good speaker wire and banana plugs?

Yep. Monoprice is a great place for speaker wire, cables, and connectors.

The previous version Pioneer SP-BS21 are only $59 a pair:

That's a good deal smile.gif

The BS22 is the second generation Pioneer Andrew Jones designed book shelf speaker. It was considerably redesigned (cabinet, tweeter, etc.). IMHO, it is a much better sounding speaker than the BS21 and digs a bit deeper at 55 Hz compared to the 65 Hz of the BS21.

hmm i saw some reviews saying that it even sounds better than the bs41... is that exaggerated or possibly true? but in any case the bs41 are out of my price range (although i wouldnt mind grabbing the bs22s for $77 if that deal comes soon again)

anything worth checking in the nyc craigslist?

Get these. Looks like Klipsch kg 1.5's. I've heard them and they are ok. Can't imagine finding anything better for $30-$40 bucks.

those are too far for me to pick up...

how are these infinity speakers?

http://www.frys.com/product/7385774?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

or these

http://www.frys.com/product/6937347?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

both are $49.99 per speaker.

or these klipsch b-20 for 110

http://www.frys.com/product/7580966

all areout of my budget, but i'm still trying to learn about prices so these might serve as a good reference when i actually find something cheaper.

You might drop by J&R or B&H Photo (both in Manhattan) and see if there is anything in their used departments.
