Looking for speaker recommendations for my family room. Here are the specifics:

  • 6,154 cubic sq. ft., 2-story family room, 18' x 20' x 17'
  • Max budget $3,700 for 5 speakers and 2 subs
  • 50% TV / 30% Video Games / 20% Music
  • Will be buying Denon X4000 receiver
  • No DIY options please

Initially I was set on 2x PSB T6's, 1x C5, 2x B4's, and 2x PSA XV15's. Now I am leaning more towards 4x HSU HB-1 MK2, 1x HC-1 MK2, and 2x VTF-15H. Or even use the HC-1 for the L/C/R in that setup. The HSU setup would be at least $600 cheaper than the PSB's. Are there better options?

In describing the picture better: The rear surrounds are prewired 8' up the wall and will be mounted there. The green line shows that on the main floor there is a half-wall that opens up into a large kitchen/breakfast area. The blue line shows that on the upper level it is open to a loft area which opens up to the rest of the upstairs. There are stairs in the back of the room leading upstairs. So really the room is much larger than 6,154 sqft.

Would probably do you well to audition some speakers first. You could also look at the Klipsch Reference Series, Ascend Acoustics, JBL Studio, and EMP Tek. If you go with something like Ascend or HSU, you have enough money to get a good pair of subs, this is probably what I would lean towards.

I would go with this:

Ascend CMT-340SE L/R
Ascend CMT-340SE C
Ascend CBM-170 SE SL/SR

Then pair that with either 2 Power Sound XV30s, 2 SVS PB12-Plus, or 2 Rythmik FV15HP (You get a discount when purchasing these with Ascend speakers)

Do you like music and/or movies loud? If so, then Hsu should probably be your choice.

I would choose a Hsu subwoofer regardless.

I do like loud. Those Ascend's look good, I like the matching pedestal stands for the L/R. They seem very similar to the HSU HC-1 MK2, any advantages/disadvantages? Right now I could get the Ascend's with 2x Rythmik FV15HP's shipped for $3700. Is that setup $650 better than the HSU's?

I haven't heard the HSU speakers, but the Ascends sound great and they have a huge following. Maybe check in the Ascend owner's thread to see if anyone has compared them. I think the Rythmik is a better sub, but the HSU looks nicer.
