That's actually a decent amount to spend on budget speakers. However if you want to buy a full 5.0 speaker set, then that doesn't leave you with very much left over for a decent Sub. If your Sony sub works okay, keep it for now and upgrade it later when you get a chance.

Front speakers: Polk TSi400 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107TSI400B/Polk-Audio-TSi400-Black.html

Center speaker: Polk TSi CS10 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107CS10B/Polk-Audio-TSi-CS10-Black.html

Surround Speakers: Polk TSi100 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107TSI100B/Polk-Audio-TSi100-Black.html

All together around $660.

Also that Jamo set you mentioned would work. Don't know how good they are, but it is an inexpensive set.

Also, this is what I use:

Sony SS-B3000: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B3000-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B000OG6I6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372406061&sr=8-1&keywords=SS-B3000

Center speakers: Sony SS-CN5000: http://www.frys.com/product/6173009

Surround speakers: Sony SS-B1000: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-2-Way-Bookshelf-Speakers-SONSSB1000/dp/B0057WOVN8/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1372406187&sr=1-4&keywords=SS-B1000

All together cost me about $240. May cost you more than that now because the price seems to be going up on these speakers. Also the CN5000 is discontinued by Sony and becoming hard to find. They may be making way for a new version. These speakers are not the best, but they are very affordable and they sound pretty good when set up correctly.

The Pioneer BS-22 speakers are WAY WAY better than the Sony speakers you have, and the price is ridiculously low (around $150 per pair) for their quality.

If you can, look at the review of them in the current Stereophile magazine.

I would buy 4 of those and their matching center speaker to start with.

the most common recommended budget speakers are the infinity primus series, polk monitor series and the andrew jones pioneers. All have their fans, and all have their good points and bad points, and all can be had for ridiculously low prices....at least in the USA.... i like the polks my self and think the pioneers are the worst of the 3 with the infinities being in the middle.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

Don't let Commsysman hear you say that! He always recommends the Pionneers for a budget setup.

(I need to hear these speakers. Haven't had a chance to yet. I think the Pioneer's are ugly as sin and I don't think I could get them past the WAF. I've heard the Polk speakers and don't think they sound all that much better than my signficantly cheaper Sony speakers. Though I'm finding that with all these budget speaker brands, they all tend to sound similar)
