Hello,
I've been scouring the interwebs. I have roughly $300-$400 in the budget for a 5.1 setup.

I have a Pioneer VSX-1122-K Receiver.

Some options I see are:
Energy Take Classic 5.0 or 5.1 ($199 or $299)
Energy RC Micro 5.1 ($350)
JBL CS6100BG ($350)
MartinLogan MLT-2 ($279)

I was also considering the Pioneer Andrew Jones Design, but buying all of it would be really busting the budget($490)...unless there are some cheaper satellite speakers I could go with rather than buying 2 pairs of the Bookshelfs...i don't have space for the floorstanding speakers.

Please let me know what you'd recommend for a family room surround setup...mainly used for sports and music, but the occasional weekend movie.

Thanks!

How big of a room are you talking about?

I would probably go with a 2.1 or a 3.1 system with better components than buying the systems you have listed.

Honestly, I would start with 2.1 or a 3.1 system and add surrounds later.

For a 2.0 system I would might recommend a pair of P163's on sale and a BIC F-12 or an NXG sub.

The Andrew Jones speakers might also be a good choice for fronts.

Here are links to the subs I mentioned.

Some other options might include some Polk speakers or something used off of eBay or Craigslist.

Also, are you near a Fry's, they have some great sales at times.

The Pioneer bookshelves will do a better job than those other small satellite speaker sets you listed. They seem to go on sale quite frequently. Ask in the owners thread to see if anyone knows of good deals: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1278774/pioneers-speaker-genius-hits-low-price-point.

Then wait until you can afford the Dayton SUB1200. That's the best low budget home theater sub. Much better than the Pioneer sub and other subs in that price range.
