Looking at 7.1 Denon 1912 or 1913, Sony STR-DN1030, Yamaha RX-V673, Pioneer 1022, and Onkyo 515, 616 receivers. The receiver should be capable of receiving Pandora and other internet music sites. Bluetooth would be a plus. Want relatively good quality, sound, and good connectivity to the net. To be set up in living room which measures 15x20 with 8 foot ceiling.

Would like a quality set of 5.1 speakers to start with. I am leaning toward buying Polkaudio speakers. Trying to spend about $300 on receiver and about $300 to $400 on speakers. Accessories4less.com or Amazon is prob where I would purchase the AVR and speakers. Just want a reasonably good system to start with.

Is buying a used system too risky? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

For your budget, I think the Andrew Jones' Pioneer speakers are one of the best options. Used is another good option, and speakers generally hold up well over time if they aren't abused too much.

I would maybe start with 3.1 and add in surrounds later. You could get a pair of the FS52 towers, the C22 center, and a Dayton SUB1200 for $400, and then down the road add a pair of BS22s for surrounds. I would lean towards the Denon AVR-1913, the 1712 is 7.1 also but does not have networking.

For 300 dollars for a 5.1, I would absolutely buy used. New, that kind of money won't really even get a decent front stage...

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

The Andrew Jones speakers and Dayton Sub option will be good if purchased from parts express. You may have to skip the towers and go bookshelf. For $353 + 14.95 shipping for the sub you can get the:
1. Dayton Audio SUB-1200 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-629&scqty=1
2. Pioneer SP-C22 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=250-657&scqty=1
3. Pioneer SP-BS22LR http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=250-656&scqty=1

And for $38.80 more you can get these Daytons for your surround and they are will rated for the price.
4. Dayton Audio B652 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-652&scqty=1

Here are the reviews for the Pioneer (LCR) and Dayton bookshelf speakers and sub.

A lot of times TigerDirect sells the FS52s for $99.99 and Best Buy will match that price. Also if you live near a Fry's, they regularly have the Pioneers on sale for a big discount.

I have no speakers yet, this is a totally new system. Leaning toward the Denon 1913 or the Denon E400. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
