I just purchased an older town home and now I am trying to plan my very modest home theater setup and I am pretty much new to speaker setups, so go easy on me. I am replacing a Bose Acoustimass10 HTIB because it underwhelmed me (surprise surprise...)

What I currently have is:

- Denon AVR-891
- 46" Samsung LCD TV (will be upgraded to a bigger TV likely around Black Friday)
- Just bought a pair of Polk Monitor60's for cheap

Mostly do TV/Movie watching and gaming, and some music listening, but my wife and I are by no means audiophiles.

So my TV room is a little small and a little strange. Forgive the bad pictures, but I cant take any of my own yet as we haven't taken possession yet. I also don't have much in the way of dimensions either, which sucks.

So here is the room the theater will be in:
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), default quality
I know its not a great pic, but maybe it'll give a little idea of the room size.

Also here is a picture of the adjoining dining room (for acoustics purposes)
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), default quality

Finally here is an awesome paint depiction of the way I plan on having it set up.

- brown things are tables
- the green thing is a chair
- the grey thing is a sectional
- the blue thing is where my media components will be
- the cyan thing is the TV
- the magenta squares are the Monitor 60's

So I have approximately $1,000 budget for:
- sub-woofer
- surround rears
- center channel

My first questions are about placement

1. Where should the sub go? In the corner beside the speaker?
2. Should the sub be down firing or side firing?
3. Should I be mounting the center channel below the TV (assuming it is at eye level while on the couch), directly above the TV, or on the ceiling pointing downwards?
4. Where should I be mounting the rear surrounds? At ear level, or on the ceiling pointing down?

My other questions are about what I should purchase

A. I understand that the sub is likely the most important speaker, so should I be looking at one of the entry-level HSUs?
B. What should I get for a center? A Polk CS2/CS20?
C. What should I get for rears? (this is likely the area where I can increase the budget). Monitor 30's are on for cheap right now, but I wonder if I need something multi directional?

Finally, I will likely be in this place for a long time and chances are I won't be upgrading for awhile after this. Thanks in advance for the help.

A. From HSU I would get something like the VTF-3 MK4 or the VTF-2 MK4 depending on the size of that room. Other options would include the Outlaw LFM1-EX and the Rhythmik LV12R.

B. CS2. This will match your front L/R speakers perfectly.
C. Monitor 30s should be a good match.

That room is an acoustical nightmare. you've nowhere to put your rear speakers. you could bring the couch forward a foot or two to be able to get the speakers behind you. your side surrounds will have odd placement as well? one would have to go on a speaker stand to the right of the couch (facing the tv) the other would need to be wall mounted, however, to anyone sitting on that left sideof the couch, the left surround content will sound like its coming from behind them.

Subwoofer should probqbly go close to that corner, but that really depends on how the room deals with bass freqs. your left and right main speakers should be further apart from each other based on the distance to the main listening position, but it appears as if you have a limited amount of space to work with on that wall.

I would probably just stick to a 3.1 system for now. You don't have any good options for surround speakers, and if you really want them I would consider in-celing. Grab the matching center (CS20) and then add a sub. The HSU 3.4 is a good recommendation, as is the Outlaw LFM1-EX.

Living Room
Samsung PN60F5300 | Denon DBP-1611 | Roku 3
Denon AVR-1713 | EMP E55Ti | EMP E56Ci | EMP E5Bi | BIC F-12

Computer
Topping TP23 | NHT SuperZero 2.0 | Velodyne DEQ-8R

Thanks for the comments so far. I know the room sucks, but its all we could afford for where we want to live.

I really wanted to get 5.1 in there. I was already sure 7.1 wasn't going to work. Can anyone recommend some in ceiling speakers? Where would they be placed?

I see the Outlaw LFM1-EX is down firing, whereas the VTF-3 MK4 is side firing. Will that make a difference?

Regarding the subwoofers I donĀ“t think down-firing versus side-firing will be that important but you will probably have to experiment with placement in that difficult space.
