My son is a music major and major audiophile. He was going to buy a soundbar
for listening to his music and for his TV/gaming.

I talked him out of it and convinced he would be better with real speakers. I suggested the pioneer Andrew Jones book shelfs or the energy take classics. He seem willing to increase his budget to the energy take classic. He liked the size and cost ($299) for a complete 5.1 set. He did not like the idea of starting with a 3.1 setup. The Andrew Jones setup would have been $400.

I used AVS forums as my research tool again. It was great as usual. My question is did I provide good advice. Are there any other options that are much better at the same cost or much cheaper with the same quality.

Also I am encouraging him to buy a Demon 1613 receiver. Talking him up from the Demon 1513. Is this a good match for the take classics.

Lastly I the system will be going into a medium to small living room.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated. I am an engineer and thus am expected to be the family expert in all electronic purchases for the family.

Please help me look good.

John

I have the Denon 1613 and used to have Take Satellite speakers. They'll be fine together but the Pioneers would be better for music due to the larger drivers and cabinets.

Where are you located because right now Fry's has the Pioneer BS-22 speakers for $77/pr. If you have one close by that's quite a deal.

These NHT speakers are better than the Take Classics too and are currently going for $60 each.

Adding this subwoofer would get you just above $400

FYI, the brand is called Denon, not Demon...

Regardin the Denon spelling. I was typing on an Android pad in the car. I believe it was the spell checker, but I could have fat fingered it. Anyway I believe my son is going to go with the Energy Take Classics. He is a poor college student. I could not stretch him to the Pioneers or NHTs.

I at least feel like I got him to a better place than a sound bar. From what I have read no one dislikes the Energy Classics. I think most people think it the Pioneers or others (NHTs) may offer more bang for the buck, but it also is more bucks.

Thanks for the feedback. More is welcome as he probably is not going to order the speakers until tomorrow.
