hey, first of all great information and people on this site, very helpful.

I am trying to setup a home theater in my basement. I already have gotten a 110 inch projection screen along with Mitsubishi HC4000 projector.

I was going to order the Denon dht-1513ba combo with the boston MCS160 speakers, reading along i figured the denon avr-1613 is a much better amp with auddesey and etc.

Now my big dilemma is should i just order the combo dht-1513 denon amp with the mcs 160 speakers or should i get the mcs 160 5.1 speaekrs with the denon avr-1613 amp, would there be a big difference?

I am open to all suggestion but not trying to spend too much $ on a college student budget. I can also go for a pair of book shelf or a pair of tower but i want my speaker system budget around $350. Also looked at boston sound ware xs speakers.

Please help, Thank you

should i do a 5.1 system or start of with only 2 floor stand speaker or 2 book shelf, i very lost. for $400 i can get the denon 1513 amp with mcs 160 boston speakers or should i get the denon 1613 amp with those speakers any difference?

I would say looking at that picture that room is an acoustic nightmare. Get some furnishing in there, put up stuff that can dampen the sound if you at all care about sound quality. Heavy curtains, thick rugs, cushy chairs, etc. Second of all, $350 will get you an OK pair of active speakers, but it won't get you a modern receiver and half way decent set of speakers all brand new. You desperately need to scour the craigslist and ebay for good deals. I hate to sound pessimistic, because the good news is you can have a nice sounding system for $350. It would involve going used though, and diligently looking for deals. I have seen lots of great deals within your budget though. A great resource for this is classified sections of audio message boards, like this site, audioholics, Home Theater Shack, Audiogon, Klipsch, among others (here's another one). Keep your eyes open, ask questions, have patience, you can have something that sounds nice.

$350 is what i want to spend on speakers.... the receiver is basically bought but i need to make sure if i should get the bundle with the receiver denon 1513 or go get the denon avr-1613

i see some great deal at accesories4less .... but i cant choose if i should get a 5.1 package or start off with 2 tower speaker or book shelf ...

right now i am picking between the bundle of the devon 1513 receiver with boston mcs 160 speakers or should i buy the mcs 160 speakers separate with a denon avr-1613 receiver.... also looked at 2 tower a250 boston speakers or the 5.1 boston sound ware xs

Skip satellite speakers. Nothing with less than a 4" woofer will sound full. The MCS160 and soundware XS will sound terrible. The Boston Towers might sound OK, maybe.

Why are you budgeting 400 dollars for an av reciever and only 350 for speakers!? I would buy the cheapest av reciever you can find ( under 200 if possible) and then buy better speakers. For 600 dollars, you can get a pair of ascend acoustic cmt 340s. I got the Yamaha rxv373 for 150 new from new egg and it is 5.1, has enough power for my room, and has decent room correction!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

+1

Less on the receiver, more on the speakers, will give you a better sounding setup.

so should i start off with 2 tower speakers or 2 bookshelf speakers vs a 5.1 system???... i can get the denon avr-1613 receiver for about $220 or should i go cheaper with the receiver ...

for example tower speakers i can start off with 2 ( BOSTON ACOUSTICS A250 2-Way Dual 5.25") or 2 (YAMAHA NS-F210) with a devon avr 1613 receiver ... or should i go off something else like book shelf speakers...

btw i am basing my choice off www.accessories4less.com

Getting good speaker will make the single biggest difference. Yes, I would recommend going 2.0 for now and the add as you can save little. Buying towers might make sense if you are going to go without a sub for awhile!

You can also start with bookshelf speakers and the sub, and then later on get towers and move the bookshelves to the rear if you are not happy with the performance of the bookshelves.

if you are really tight with your budget ,you can get a fluance speaker setup starting from $250 free shipping for a 5.0,also they have other speaker options, another option is the Andrew Jones Designed Speakers or Bic America speakers ,this are at least a good start for your budget.

Or start with the other recommendations above.

fluance looks awesome, what receiver should i pair with it ? stick to the denon or the Harman Kardon® AVR-154 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver is $99 with the purchase i believe of the speakers

but the harman reicever only 30 watts x 5 i believe thats not enough right? would it the fluance speaker sound better with denon ?

That AVR is pretty old. And for the speakers I would go with the Pioneers over the Fluance.

Or, since it seems you don't really care about sound that much, get the Denon 1613 and a decent set of bookshelf speakers like the Cambridge Audio S30 and some inexpensive or home made stands.

Def Tech SC8000
Harman Kardon AVR 1600

thanks alot ! i am about to put my order through for the fluance av-htb 5.0....its a great deal, what receiver should i pair with it... the harman avr-154 is only $99 with this package but it looks like its too under powered if im right?... should i stick to ordering a denon 1613? or go yamaha or denon 1513.... or even onkyo receivers?

im stuck between denon avr-1613 vs yamaha rx v375.... is the yamaha going to be louder due to 100w per channel compared to denon 75watt?

I would skip the HK AVR though. It's 8 years old eek.gif

Get the Denon 1613, the Fluance speakers will likely need all the room correction they can get.

My guess is that the projector is a gift and is used ,If you can stretch your budget and get the Andrew jones pioneer speakers that will be a better choice ,the pioneer are very well accepted here.

Or you can start with the towers or the bookshelf.

If you want to go with the fluance is okay I honestly don't know how they sound, I just read some good reviews around the internet ,but yes you need a good receiver with room correction.
