I have a Sony BDV-E390 5.1-channel, 1000W (167W x 5 + 165W). I am looking to start upgrading the speakers and eventually get a nice receiver, I am wondering if I would be able to purchase a couple of speakers now, and run them off the Sony.
I am looking at a Polk Audio CS10 Center Channel Speaker and Polk Audio R150 bookshelf speakers. Will these be ok to use since the output is 167W?

I apologize to said this but Sony receivers spec are not accurate, they inflate their spec to attract peoples attention.

I have a $1600 msrp marantz receiver that push 125watts per channel.

But your receiver should be able to driver those speakers fine.

Well I have $200 right now that I can spend. I was thinking I would get the speakers to start with then pick up a receiver in a couple months when the wife lets me have more money. Do you think I would be better off starting with the receiver and using the crappy Sony speakers till I can get speakers?

That entire setup has got to go.

No argument here. The problem is that I am being forced by finances to piece this together bit by bit. I know that I will need a new receiver, speakers, a sub, and a new BD player. So that's what $700 with what I am looking at... I guess the money is going in the bank for a while...

The money can go in the bank for a while or you can buy some components as they go on sale and keep them around until you have a full set.

BTW, what is the size of your room and what will you be using the system for?

The room is 18x16. The front speakers are on bookshelves on either side of the TV with the center above the TV. (its on a stand not wall mounted). The left side speaker is right off to the side of the couch and the right side is on the wall behind the couch. The couch is about 9 feet back.

You have $700 to spend on it? Or are we still at the $200 range?

Assuming you're in the $200 range.. If you're patient you can find the Infinity Primus P363 speaker for ~$100 each. Two of those would blow everything your old system has away. If you choose bookshelf speakers you can look at Cambridge Audio S30. I have no doubts they'll be the best speakers for ~$200.

The problem is without something to power them, they'll just sit in the closet unused. frown.gif

I'd save until you can do one of these two with a reasonable receiver!

I have $200 to spend right now, I can maybe gat another couple hundo out of my Christmas Bonus, then it could be wait and see. I would like to maintain 5.1, would I be better off with a 2.1 set up with my room size do you think?

In your price range you would be a million times better with 2.1. Focus on two great quality fronts (bookshelf or tower) then get the best sub you can afford and you will be much better off than getting 5 poor/good quality speakers in my opinion. Take a look at the thread here on the Cambridge Audio S30's. They helped me make my decision!

The pioneer bookshelf speakers the old version and new version are very often on sale, they are considered the best budget speakers. You can get a pair for under $100 dollars .

This speakers are getting a lot of attention here.

SP-BS21-LR old version and new version SP-BS22-LR

You can get 4 speakers for less than $200 then if you think the denon is over you budget ,you can look at Acessories4less.com for a less expensive receivers.

^ So looking at the Pioneer speakers, brings up the question, are the Polk speakers I originally mentioned just not as good? (maybe just crap?)

I should mention that I live in an apartment so Bass is less of a concern than overall sound quality. If that would change what you think as far as speakers. Eventually after I buy a house I intend to have enough Bass to crack the foundation but that's a ways down the road...

Thanks for the input guys, more is welcome if you have it!!!

NHT, S30, and Pioneer would all be substantially better than the Polk speakers. The S30's are great for bass but don't shake houses or upset neighbors. They're amazingly detailed and deep for a speaker their size. I imagine they'd really impress you!

The only ones I've heard are the only ones I'd recommend. S30 :-D

Edit: I am adding that you will absolutely not be disappointed with any of those three.
