I currently have a 7.1 setup with my Onkyo 818.
Basicaly 5 forward and 2 side surround.
The forward are Center, L/R/, L/R wide vis Audessey DSX set to front wide.

So in terms of movie watching would I see better impact with that configuration or should I move the front wide into rear surround?

So 3 front and 4 back?
Where front is Center, L/R
Back is Rear Surround and 2 Side Surround?

Its totally up to you. Try it both ways and see which way you like it better.

If there was a consensus that the surround backs sound better you probably wouldn't have the option for front wides or heights.

Depends, if you have the room for proper 7.1 set up it may be beneficial. Personally I have never had the room for rear surrounds, so I have played with wides and heights. I really like wides, audyssey dsx really makes a huge impact on movies.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

Depends on your seating location.

If your seating is at or near the back wall, then stick to your current set-up (no space behind you for the rear speakers).

If your seating is a few feet away from the back wall, then 4 surround speakers will give you side-vs-rear imaging and wrap-around envelopment that's not possible with only 2 surround speakers.
