So, you're saying a pair of their cube speakers and a box or two of Captain Crunch would do the trick?

:D

- Acoustimass module: 46Hz-200Hz.

So there you have it. No mid-range, no highs, no lows, it must be a Bose.

The most notable thing in those specs is the apparently designed-in hole between 200 and 280 Hz. Well, at least they are honest about it!

Bose isn't honest about it, those specs came from 3rd party measurements.

Everything.

So, with all of the experience offering advice here, anybody listen to the ARX A1B? They look interesting - a very differnt option to the Cambridge Audio S20s in roughly the same price bracket.

The price I'm seeing is double of the S20's so I would expect a marked improvement for twice the money. Ascend makes some really nice stuff. $300 is very inexpensive cor a speaker with a planar tweeter.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Agreed. I have the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 SEs. Same price as the ARX, and people have described these two as comparable in class. I used to have the Cambridge Audio S30s, and find the Ascends to be a step up; I would assume the ARX A1bs are, too. I use mine in a computer desktop setup for nearfield usage.

I don't think compare is the right word!

You can buy the Bose if you want harsh sound that has like zero soundstaging.. What do you expect from cubes.

Awesome! Sounds like you got the good deal smile.gif

Now, tower speakers won't necessarily give you more volume if that's what you mean by "blow the sound." While manufacturers are sometimes measuring it differently (or exaggerating), what you want to look at is sensitivity ratings. That gives you some idea of how loud speakers can go for a given amount of power. Those Onkyo towers you were thinking of? 86 dB/W/m. Cambridge S20? 85db. So good chance that the Onkyos would not be significantly louder.
