Hello,

I was wondering about a pair of book shelve speakers that are better sounding then Bose 301 and hopefully a bit cheaper. Maybe factory refurbished? I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-8050 receiver and im planing on purchasing a Polk PSW-505 for a sub woofer to compliment the speakers. Im using these in a small place. These speakers are going to be for music listening for some good rock and bass drops.

Honestly? Just about anything is better than Bose. The PSW 505 isn't a bad sub, but the Klipsch RW12-D is one of the best values out there right now. You can find it on sale for as low as $250, you just have to patient.

What is your budget for the front speakers?

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Anything else will be better then any modern Bose "Blows" speaker. They haven't made good speakers in a very long time. It's been downhill since they started marketing their tiny micro sound systems. It's all garbage. There are many good bookshelf speaker options.

The Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers are some of the best you can get, and they are only $350 at Music Direct.

They sound one hell of a lot nicer than those Bose 301 turkeys.

Actually, the Pioneer BS22 speakers sound way better than those Bose speakers, and they list for under $200.

They are also some of the most attractive speakers you can buy; the wood finishes compare with some speakers costing thousands of dollars.

Check out the Stereophile review on them.

The Pioneer BS22 are MUCH better than those Polks, and sometimes Amazon has them for under $150.

I tried to find out the technical specs on Bose Lifestyles, which Bose does not publish, but this is what I found out:

Frequency response:
- Cubes: 280Hz-13.3Khz +/- 10.5 dB.
- Acoustimass module: 46Hz-200Hz.

So there you have it. No mid-range, no highs, no lows, it must be a Bose.

Those specifications back up my previous statement. Those specifications really Blow. Especially those speakers they call cubes. They're basically a tweeter and a bad one at that. And the bass module is about as good as a cereal box with a 4'' driver put in it. I think the cereal box would sound better and be more capable.

Cambridge makes nice little speakers. A lot of people really like the Energy Take series.

The sub that comes with it should be plenty for your apartment

I'm rooting for the cereal box. If I had to pick between the two I would pick the cereal box with the driver thrown inside. It would be lighter on my wallet and it would probably sound better then the Blows bass module.biggrin.gif

THIS!

You have a nice receiver and sub. I think the Wharfedales should be the lowest quality you should look at. They are an amazing deal for that price.

Other than that there is the Infinity P163 for around $180 a pair, and the Energy as another member mentioned above.

Bose does not publish specs for the cubes. Are those specs real measured third party or is that some joke, becuase that is pathetic. +/- 3db is prolly around 500hz-10khz lol. You will hear voices coming from the Acoustimass "module". haha

Well listen money is kinda tight and a technical representative form Crutchfield recommended the S20 so im most likely going to do that. I think i can get some nice sounding music form my little setup for a small area that will sound fairly decent for most people.

Do not take recommendations from Crutchfield. I took advice from them a couple months back for car speakers and they were horrible. Absolutely terrible sounding speakers. For your price range I think the Pioneers SP-BS22-LR would sound the best by far. There are people trying them with $2k in electronics with very good results.

He's safe with this recommendation. The S30's are very good speakers and better than the BS22 although the Pioneer is significantly cheaper. There's a pretty large thread about them here on AVS so one wouldn't really need the opinion of Crutchfield sales so make the purchase.

I have the TSi 100's set up as surrounds at the moment. They work well in that role. I have TSi 400's currently as mains. These are NOT audiophile grade speakers IMO, but they do a nice job with home theater dynamics. I have an old, smaller Paradigm sub, and am working on getting that upgraded - for HT that is perhaps the most critical part of the speaker "chain".

Basically, I think the Polks are OK for home theater, but for music, I would really consider another direction (and not Bose...). Those S20's should be a good value for you and perform well.
