It also has a fully adjustable phase, so that might help as well.

Unsure how to use the phase. Is it just a matter of trial and error listening for what sounds good?

I used to have the S30s. I like the Ascends better. I think the Ascend driver has better transient response, giving them better mids than the S30 and very resolving mid bass to me. Might not have the impact you want (use EQ for that), but it's very well-defined bass smile.gif

I listen to a lot of EDM, and as a consequence of that sound I described above, I really like them when used with a sub for that genre. However, if you are into female vocals, know that the Ascends don't have that bright sparkly high end that some people like which can emphasis female vocals.

Sub is sitting directly ahead of me and speakers are on sides. Not ideal as it sounds pretty boomy this way but I may rearrange things.

Sounds like you might need to EQ it to get the midbass you want. Not like the PB-1000 doesn't have the headroom to handle some boost if it's sitting that close to you biggrin.gif

Does your iPod have a bass boost? Might try that. Or if you have a laptop, get a DAC and use your computer. A $50 DAC can make a computer have as good or better SQ as the iPod.

Speaking of which, are you using an LOD with your iPod? Bypassing the headphone amp will improve the SQ a little. Headphone amp power is not optimum for line level input.

Alright good to hear you like the Ascends for EDM. Dont think theres a built in equalizer on ipod touch but maybe I can get an app. Not familiar with what LOD is haha, right now I've got a 6 foot monster cable plugged into my ipod and running to the line ins on the sub.

The LOD is a line out dock. It bypasses the headphone amp so you can send a line level, unamplified signal out of iPods and iPhones. Your Rotel amp is good enough you should notice some difference. I'm not an Apple person, but I would imagine the FiiO L3 would work. Research and see smile.gif

Cool I'll look into that. I Also noticed you mentioned wave crest audio HVL-1 in another thread. Also the FOCAL - chorus 705v were mentioned. Any major differences between those and the Ascends?

Be aware that with the LOD, you might not be able change the volume any more with the iPod (not sure; the volume could be part of the headphone amp).

HVL-1 is designed by Dave Fabrikant, owner of Ascend who designs all the Ascend speakers.

Focal Chorus are good, too. They'll have a different sound from the Ascends. Which you'll like better is best determined by listening to them. smile.gif

Hm well I'm interested in the HVL-1s for sure they seem to be highly regarded. Nice that they are all black like the rest of my system, simple but decent looking speakers. Also only 230$ vs the 300$ for the 170se's. I live in Chicago maybe one of the audio stores has them for me to try out..

Nope. They are Internet direct like the Ascends.

The other Internet direct speakers to consider in this price range are the Arx A1b.

But if you are in Chicago, you should go out and do some listening. There should be some hi-fi audio shops smile.gif

So I think the 170se's, HVL-1's, and both KEF q300s and 100s would all work with my set up. I will probably order the 170se's for the return policy and since they are 300$ (plus shipping though). I am still drawn to the looks of the KEFs (yea thats a slight factor for me) though and the q300s are listed for 470$ with free shipping at designeraudiovideo. Would you still pick the Ascends cel4145?

FWIW the 170SEs aren't the prettiest speakers or with the finest finish and a bit squatly shaped....YMMV. smile.gif I do like their product line and their customer service if needed has been great. Might want to check this thread for audition possibilities in your area http://www.avsforum.com/t/1354492/the-ill-demo-my-speakers-for-other-enthusiasts-thread

I'm also a newbie, but i've just got the Wharfedale 10.2 diamonds and I love them. They have more than enough low end bass for my apt and sound great. i'd suggest looking into these as well. they are hard to find in the US, but I have yet to see a bad review on these. BTW, the 10.2's are $450 from music direct. I'm using a denon X2000 to drive them btw.

fwiw, i just recently upgraded from the Cambridge s-30's( great speakers for their size and price ) to the kef q 300's this past year in my small listening room (10 x 12).i have fallin in love with the uni-q driver.in my room they do everything right from great lower bass extension (without my sub on) great detail, soundstage, imaging , dynamics and very pleasant on the eyes(with grills off very retro)great sounding all around speaker in the $500 budget. they are not as neutral as my outlaw bls speakers but they do everything else better for 1/2 the price. compared to my reference 3a mm de cappo i's in my much larger living room they did fall a little short on over round sound but if i didn't have the cappo i's to compare i'm sure i would be quite happy with them. just a little comparison to the speakers i own.

i'm so laid back,i'm laid out

^ Yea I really like the looks of the q300s, handsome. Plus I can get them in cherry and I have cherry furniture, or black to match my system. Seems I'm gunna choose between those (470$ + 0 free shipping) or the 300$ +32 shipping Ascends.

If I were to get the Ascends or Q300s and still wire my source through the PB1000 would 80Hz be cutting off too much from the speaker? Would it be better to wire the sub through the Pre Out and set the low pass to the bottom end of the speakers?

If Rotel amps are tranperent, then its your source thats clinical not the amp. It can be your speakers, I suggest going with musical speakers that are fast.

You dont want to go with Cambridge 30's that are flat. Mixed with your already clinical amp, it will sound dead, period. Go with lively and musical speakers like the Energy RC-10's. Go on Ebay and you can maybe get a used pair.

Typically 80Hz is a pretty appropriate crossover for most bookshef speakers. Your sub will play content below that much better than the speakers will, depsite them being rated to go lower. The PB-1000 has a 85Hz high pass filter IIRC and that would be a desirable setup in my opinion. Source > sub > amp > speakers.

80hz often works very well since a sub can sometimes handle midbass better than the speakers. Best thing to do is try and see what works best to you smile.gif

Are there any reasonably priced DACs that have built in equalizers? Or is there such a thing? That would seem to kill two birds, improving sound quality and allowing me higher quality EQing than with my ipod or laptop.

I don't know of home audio DACs that have EQ. I don't see how that would work. Get a Behringer EQ.
