Hello all. I am currently trying to sell my Monitor Audio BX-5 towers and I am looking for a pair of speakers to replace them.
I am thinking I would like a pair of bookshelf two-way speakers. I really like the BX-5 but in my basement room with the cement floor they can be very in-your-face in the midrange department.

My current system is a Yamaha RXv2700 with an Adcom GSA 6000 amp and Klipsch SW 350.

I have a Paradigm DSP-3100 sub but I replaced it with the Klipsch. I found the DSP3100 very hard to pair with other speakers. In my room it was very "boomy" The Klipsh seems better in my place for now but ultimately I'll try both with whatever speaker I get for my mains.
The BX-5's don't really need a sub for music anyway...

I only listen to music so this is a 2.1 system, no center or rears...

I have a wonderful little pair of Pinnacle AC-400 speakers. They are very small but they sound so nice. Too small for any useful bass at louder volumes. I was looking at crutchfield.com (and others) for speaker pairs $400 or less (maybe $450 if I can sell the bx-5).
It seems so many choices I don't know where to start. I think I'd like a speaker a bit laid back, good bass and nice treble with not too much of the in your face mid range I get from my bx-5. In the past I've tries Axiom, M22, M3, MA BR2 (My son is using these)....

Thanks for reading and if I left out any detail to help make a recommendation please just ask.

If you like the Pinnacle sound, you could try a pair of the BD 500. They are $450 @ audiogurus.com.

The Focal Chorus 706V is $450 and is another great option, as well as the PSB Image B6 which I often see on sale for <$450.

I also enjoy my Pinnacle Speakers.

They go on sale on tech.woot.com all of the time. The BD500 (first series) are $200/pair when they show up on there. Lately they have been selling their S-Fit 1050 towers for $150 each on that website. I have those speakers and really enjoy them but they also have a strong mid-range (something it looks like you're trying to stay away from). I haven't been in the audio game for a long time but those towers pair nicely with my Klipsch rw-12d sub.

If you can do a little bit of assembly, this kit would offer terrific performance for the money.

Thank you all for the replies. The Arx look interesting...
I was playing with a pair of Polk R20 last night and I liked the sound and power handling but found the bass to be a bit "muddy" I guess..
I realize these are inexpensive speakers. Now I'm wondering if I'd like a higher quality pair of Polks...

I had the M22 years ago but I remember that I thought the tweeters in both the M22 and M3 were very harsh sounding.
I like all types of music but lots of my listening is heaver stuff with crashing cymbals and screaming guitars. I found the axiom speakers to be hard to listen too at loud volumes. Also the M22 did not blend well with my sub at the time. I replaced the M22 with the Monitor Audio BR2 and I liked the BR2 much more.

Thanks for the reply I'll read more about the Arx...

I never listened to my Axiom system like I do my current Arx setup. I guess I didn't realize it at first but never could listen for long periods of time before just becoming uninterested in it. The Arx I find myself replaying older sacd and dvd-a that I haven't listened to in awhile and actually just going through the entire cd. Where as before I made it through a song or two and just stopped.

The M22s roll off pretty fast around 90hrz or so and then rely on room gain after that so they never worked out with the SVS subwoofers.

RC-10's are great little bookshelf speakers. I have a pair myself. A little too laid back for some but I love them.

caloyzki,

Are you the one that just buys and sells speakers?

Are there any speakers that you keep for your own personal enjoyment? I remember you had a really nice Energy setup and then you said you had to sell them all due to some emergency. The next thing we knew you bought some more Energy speakers and then sold those again.

Hello, yes that was me. It's already sold most of them. And I'm still planning to set up for me a 7.1 system. Most probably still the energy rc, coz i really like it what i have before.

These RC-10 were the only pair they had.
Sound Exchange is a dealer for Monitor Audio, Paradigm, and Mordaunt Short.....
In fact I almost chose a similar pair of Mordaunt Shorts instead of the RC-10...

I broke a woofer in one of my RC-10 this weekend. I was playing some Michael Jackson Thriller pretty loud..

Then I played Steve Miller Band, the intro to Fly like an Eagle and the wind sounds was making a terrible noise from the left channel.
Like a shrill horrible vibration. I noticed the same vibration in Jethro Tull's Bouree during the bass only part in the middle of the song.

Swapped channels and the right speaker sounded fine. Swapped woofers and the sound followed the woofer.
So now I have to place a parts order with Energy and hope they have a replacement.
I called today they can't take a parts order because the computer is down....

My luck runs true.... smile.gif

I desperately miss the pair that I sold. Used them for nearfield listening on my computer. They're very laid back which is awesome for music in my opinion and for nearfield use.
