Hello,

I'm looking for suggestions for a center channel speaker for around $150. I'm putting together a modest, budget HT system and I'm lacking a center channel at the moment.

This is what I'm considering right now...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018QROM2/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Are there any better options I may be overlooking that are in the same price range?

Thanks!

The center should at the very least be timbre matched to your fronts. What are you front speakers?

Living Room
Samsung PN60F5300 | Denon DBP-1611 | Roku 3
Denon AVR-1713 | EMP E55Ti | EMP E56Ci | EMP E5Bi | BIC F-12

Computer
Topping TP23 | NHT SuperZero 2.0 | Velodyne DEQ-8R

I agree with Transmaniacon, timbre match with your current front speakers. It will make the ideal listening system even if it is lesser than the polk you're considering.

I'm not by any means an expert on speakers but I have been doing some research for the past month on a new system here on AVS. I'm within days of an upgrade and i currently have the Sony SS-CN5000. It's paired with bookshelf SS-B3000 and sounds decent. As expected with limited budget, the clarity cannot compare to high end models especially at low volume. I did have a 2.1 originally and adding the center speaker made a world of difference. Agree with the above -- front 3 should match.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tip!

Did a quick search, having a hard time finding that (or this year's equivalent of that) speaker for sale anywhere.

Looks like Ebay has one here -- but the price is higher than what I paid for 6 years ago. If after some research you do decide you want the CN5000 and cannot find it online -- PM me and I might be willing to sell! You'd be robbing me of a center in my bedroom, but that just means you'd be giving me an excuse for another "upgrade". smile.gif

I'll keep it in mind, thanks for the offer!

You could go with the Polk center or Pioneer C22 with the condition that you upgrade the fronts at some point. Sony may be coming out with an updated version of those speakers, so maybe wait a little while and see.

Or, if you have the vertical space, use one of the bookshelves as a center. Traditional horizontal center speakers aren't the best because the horizontal drivers can cause lobing. A more idea configuration is a vertically oriented set of drivers, like a bookshelf/tower.
