Hello everyone. This is my first post at AVS, and I hope to learn a lot from the community here. I've been reading several threads on this forum (ironically, some of them were Bose-bashing threads), and found that this would be the best website to have my inquiries answered. I'm more familiar with Head-Fi, but I didn't think questions about speakers would be appropriate there.

I'm new to audiophilia. Although I'm on a quest for better sound, my ears had long been accustomed to car speakers and iPod earbuds (until I purchased the Koss KSC75 headphones and realized there is much better sound to be had beyond those earbuds). I read up some reviews about the cheap Lepai amp + Dayton B652 combo, and ended up buying just the amp to try out with some bookshelf speakers laying around my house. Even though I'm not a basshead, I found them lacking in bass. I recently received a pair of Bose 301 series II's from my dad who bought them in some estate sale. I hooked them up to the amp -- I was surprised at how well the amp was driving them. This time I found that the bass is there, but the high end is lacking (I did a full frequency sweep and recorded a response somewhere along the lines of 50Hz-16KHz).

I would like to know if there's anything better than these Bose 301's I can have for under $100, new or used. I'm a college student, so my budget is very limited, though I hope to change that. Since I'm after neutral/slightly warm sound, I would rather not add a subwoofer, but I'm open to any recommendation.

Thank you in advance for your input.

+1. They do definitely fit your budget.

You could also consider the 41's.

The sale does end today 9/22.

This is not only a good option, its your only option with that budget. Unless you look at used. Keep in mind youre trying to find a speaker for $100 that sounds better than one that costs $300. If you can step up to $200 you would have a little better options.

If youre looking for speakers that are going to be a serious upgrade, save your money and get these when you can.

I went ahead and ordered the BS21 from Amazon, where they were also $60. The S30 is way out of my budget. Is there a huge difference between the BS21 and BS22? A while ago I saw the BS22 also on sale for $60 but hesitated. smile.gif

I looked on BestBuy's website and it seems the BS21 is now discontinued.

I saw the 301's on eBay for $150-200. Does their sound really command that price? I'm hoping for a noticeable upgrade with the Pioneers, but I might be expecting too much from $60.

The BS21's are on the warm side and not as balanced as the newer BS22. The BS41 is the same way. Both are good speakers but the BS22's are a much better speaker. I own the 21's and 41's and I would cancel the order for the 21's and get the 22's.

I can't find any store with the BS22's on sale near the price of the BS21's. I should have grabbed them when they were $60... if they go on sale again, I could probably return the BS21's at no cost to me.

Does anyone own the 301's? I'd love to hear what people think about them.
