So I've settled on the Denon x2000 as my amp and SB-1000 as the sub, but now I'm debating between the Pioneer AJ Bookshelf + Center vs the HTD Level-2's in a 3.1 setup.

Anyone heard both? The cost isn't really the main thing I'm concerned about, just want to get a good front sound field with potential to expand to 5.1 in the future (Never going to go to 7.1 with this setup). I've heard a few good things about HTD, but everyone is raving about the Pioneer's so I thought I would ask before I make this last order smile.gif.

If cost isn't a huge issue, there are many other better options out there. What do you want to spend for the three speakers? How big is your room?

Living Room
Samsung PN60F5300 | Denon DBP-1611 | Roku 3
Denon AVR-1713 | EMP E55Ti | EMP E56Ci | EMP E5Bi | BIC F-12

It's not that big, 11x20 and an 8' viewing distance.

My budget is about $500 for the front three, perhaps a little more if it makes sense. One reason I was looking at HTD was the front-port, to add flexibility to the location over time...but I don't know how big a deal that is.

That is a vaid consideration, front ports allow you more placement flexibility. With $500, I would consider the Level Three bookshelves and Level Three center. I think for the money the Pioneers are great, but I would put the HTDs above them.

I really looked hard at the Level-3's, but the Center is just so damn big. I know that's what really matters for Movies/TV...but I'd be willing to spend a little more than $500 for a set with the sound quality but a little smaller in terms of size. Just can't find anything.

I haven't heard the HTDs...but lets make sure and qualify. I agree that for the price, the Pioneers are a really good value. However, I owned them and I would NOT call them a really good speaker. I had them, they got nudged out by my Polk M40s, which I also would NOT call a really good speaker..but for the money, about as good as you can do.

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

You would still enjoy the Level 2s I think, audioholics did a good review of them and liked what they heard. Another option is EMP. You could try the E5Bi and E5Ci, they offer a lot of value and I thoroughly enjoy mine. Look to audioholics for another good review of them.

I did a review of the Level TWO's just recently, and for the money I thought they were a good deal. I haven't heard the Pioneers though, so I can't really comment on those. From what I've read they seem to be pretty solid as well.

Seconding what others have said ... For their price the Pioneers are remarkable, but, if you can afford more there are better options - like the HTD Level 2's.

Because you also mentioned center speaker size concerns in one of your posts ... another standout in the same price range as the HTD Level 2's is the Cambridge Audio S30's and S50 center. They are currently on sale at http://www.accessories4less.com/, S30 pair for $190 and S50 for $150, free shipping.

Both the HTD and Cambridge Audio would be considered a nice step up from the Pioneers wink.gif

I'd have to agree with HTD.

I also love the aforementioned S30's but I think you'll get more out of HTD towers than Cambridge Audio bookshelf speakers set for the price.

The trick is to get more for you money by buying internet direct from the manufacturer. Otherwise you are paying a middle man markup. So it is very likely that the HTD would outperform the Pioneer just based on the distribution channel. Another alternative that is likely to sound better than the HTD are the EMP speakers - also internet direct. A pair of their bookshelves and the small center channel would be a little less than $600 and be attractive to boot. I'm an EMP owner myslef (I have the Impressions Towers) and I can promise you they sound better than anything I've ever heard at twice their price.
