Hello,

I have been a long time AVSforum viewer, and may I say, thank you everyone for helping us newbies! I thought I would ask for some help before buying speakers.  I'm currently looking for some bookshelves to put together a 5.2 setup.   So far the Sonus Faber sounded the best to me as they had a very warm sound.  Any suggestions to some other speakers I may want to consider? Thanks again!

I got the chance to listen to:

Bowers and WIlkins 685 and CM5

Energy

Martin Logan

Sonus Faber Venere 2.0

Totem Acoustic Model-1

What I already have:

Denon 1908 Receiver

(2) SVS PC12-NSD

Budget - $3500

Room Size: 12'x26'x8'

This is for 100% Movies

Out of those choices I'd go with the Martin Logans.

I would add Focal, Monitor Audio, Ascend Acoustics, and PSB to your list.

In particular,

Monitor Audio RX-2
PSB Imagine B
Focal Chorus 807
Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 (with NrT upgrade)

Give these a listen if you can. I know you indicated that you preferred a "warm" speaker but the options in this list are worth considering.

$1500 just for the bookshelf speakers and then buy the rest that match.  I would consider towers i just like the looks of bookshelf speakers more.

Bookshelfs will have trouble filling a room that big. You should get 2 towers for the front.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

Sorry about that. Total budget for all 5 speakers would be $3500.

I'm using Martin Logan Motion 40's ( for the front L / R ) along with other ML's , and they easily fill a room that size. Looks like you have the subs handled.

What Energy and Martin Logan speakers are you considering?

2500 cuft isn't all that huge (or is it open to other rooms?). Will you be wall mounting or using stands or? Keep in mind rear ported speakers need some breathing room, sealed can give you more mounting options.

I have Ascend Sierra-1s across the front in a much larger room (that is not totally sealed off from others, altho I can close some doors but a stairwell remains open to the downstairs) and they do just fine. The Sierra-1s (ported) with some Ascend 170SEs (ported) or 200SEs (sealed) would be a good setup (I use both 170SEs and 200SEs in my 7 ch setup). The standard Sierra/170 combo would be $ 1650 shipped, the Sierra/200 combo slightly less; the Sierra upgrade to the NrT tweeters would be an additional $450 ($300/pr). There is also I believe a Raal ribbon tweeter upgrade but not sure of cost or availability on that; there is also a Sierra-2 in the works as well as Sierra Tower/Horizon models. All somewhat within your budgeting depending on options. Ascend is hard to audition unless you're in southern california or have someone near you to let you check theirs out (they're internet direct), but they do offer an in home trial but you pay return shipping.

+1 for HT you just need big soundstage and good bass. Martin Logans will do the best room filling with their AMT tweeters. Better than any dome tweeter. If you want warm sound, and since you are going solid state for your amp rather than tubes, just add 1/3 of silver of your whole cabeling (make usre no more than 1/3). It will give you dynamics and a bit bigger soundstage and that warmth.

If you go stereo with $3,500 the door opens up to alot more options. I'd personally go 2.0.

Thank you for the feedback!  I would use stands with the speakers.  The room is open to a stairwell but i can shut the doors.  I'm not sure i'll get to listen to the Ascend's but I will check them out for sure.

Polk is another good option if you like "warm" speakers and would be a very good choice for home theater.

And this as a center.
This would be an excellent system for both music and movies and would easily fill the room. You can get a better deal on these at the Polk ebay store too.
But for the best performance you will need an external amplifier. Thats why I asked if you can hook one up to your AVR.

and electrostatic speaker for the dynamics of home theater is a recipe for weakness. Dynamic cones are way better choice for home theater electrostatics are definitely one of the worst way to go for home theater. Not to say they don't sound good they're limited in their dispersion and also limited in their dynamics.

OP already has a sub wadia 9. AMT has one of the widest dispersion. It's almost an omnipole design.

This is in reference to the OP - and dealer prices can be Lower - also, some movies have a lot of music.

Has anyone heard the SVS Ultra Tower/Bookshelf?  The 45 day free shipping/return is very tempting.
