Hi. I'm looking to buy a 5.1 speaker system and AVR all for under $1000. I live in Australia and the speakers are for a dedicated home theater room. The size of the room is around 4 meters by 6 meters (approx. 12 x 18 feet). Please list any and all systems that you think are good for this set up. My main concern is getting good sound quality for the price - I'm not into Airplay or any of that fancy stuff. Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

Wow, stuff is expensive in Australia.

I would look for the Pioneer FS52Pack for the speakers and the Pioneer VSX-523 or 823 receiver. I don't know what shops are in Australia though.

Look for speakers from Cambridge Audio, Wharfedale and Boston Acoustics -
however, they cost more there. You may need to start with 2.1 and build up.

Also check Ebay in Australia - they have some stuff for sale

Hi,

Thanks for you help so far. I've found a deal on a Yamaha receiver and speaker set here: http://www.binglee.com.au/yamaha-yht-799au-5-1ch-home-theatre-package

It's the Yamaha YHT-799AU package. Do you think this is a good deal for me?

Cheers.

It can be for you - is this your first system?
The receiver would be the best thing from this, and the sub the weakest

There is also a Harman Kardon system here - which has a JBL look.

It would be nice if you already had a receiver - this would be one to look at
Mordaunt Short

Yeah. Its my first experience with any kind of speaker system. The Harman Kardon that you mentioned also looks very good to me. Do you think its better than the Yamaha set?

Do you have stores in Australia like the U.S. has with Best Buy?

Yeah. JB Hi-Fi, Bing Lee and Harvey Norman are three such stores. You just meant like big time electronics stores right?

Can you up your budget a little?

Since this is a dedicated theater, you want high output, high sensitivity speakers.

I suggest:
5 PA speakers http://www.guitarfactory.com.au/PA/Peavey/Speakers

and a receiver http://www.videopro.com.au/p-6885-pioneer-vsx523-51-channel-av-receiver.aspx.

This puts you at $1374 and you can add a subwoofer later. Or go with 4 speakers for now and add the center and subwoofer later for $1189.
The receiver has built in room correction to help with your room and the speakers. Plus 4 pass thru, 3d ready and Apple compatibility.

This combination will give you the best bang for your buck for a dedicated theater system.

Hey thanks so much for the recommendations! I just wanted to ask a couple more questions about it as well. Do you think that these will be okay on their own or should i get some larger floor standing speakers as well? Also, have you experienced these speakers before? I've had a quick look at some reviews and saw that some people were complaining about build quality. Has that ever been a problem for you?

Thanks again for your help so far. Really appreciate it!

No, these speakers will be better on their own until you get a subwoofer to help with the low end. Floor standing speakers do not add anything when you augment all the sub bass to the subwoofer.

I haven't heard any bad reviews on them at all.

But if you are expecting these speakers to be high end, they are not, but they are probably the best budget speakers you will ever find. You will probably have to break them in for a while though.
