Hey everyone. We have a pool table room in our basement and have an OLD Denon receiver down there. We have a turntable and a cd player connected to the receiver and listen to FM radio on it as well. Room is approximately 10 x 20. Budget for a pair of bookshelf speakers is about $600 or so.

Can someone give me a couple of recommendations?

Thanks.

Don't have them yet but I just ordered a pair of Ascend Acoustics CMT 340 SE. They've gotten great reviews and are right in your price range.

The new Tekton M-Lore bookshelves. Expect about a month wait though.

Those are both great recommendations for someone who wants to spend $600 and pay some attention to the music they're hearing.

But it seems to me that in this application, people are going to be moving around, focusing their attention elsewhere, talking, and playing pool. You can get a good set of speakers for less, and spend the money on something else.

Maybe this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882325060

Are floorstanding speakers an option?

Go for the newer Deftech SM45 monitors. They have more consistent positive reviews than those SM450's in the above post. I had a pair of SM45's and IMO, for music they perform well above their price point ($400/pair). They are impressive.

Also try out the Aperion Intimus 5B monitors which get equally positive reviews, are drop-dead gorgeous, and are the same price as the SM45's. I haven't personally heard them, but that's about to change. And both of these speakers need a sub.

I don't doubt that the newer SM series is better, however, you can get the sm450 for as low as 200/pr. I suspect the newer SM aren't twice as good as the older model!

Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

Maybe not but it might still be worth it to some. Some have also said that the SM55 and 65 are not worth it over the 45's. Where to draw the line, only the individual knows.

Ready to pick something and am leaning toward the Focals mentioned above. With all the brewery costs a SW is not in the budget right now. Would I be better off with a floor standing speaker in this instance? If so are there any for music only in my price range that have good sound?

If you are in a major metro area then look at Craigslist. For $600 you can get a really nice pair of higher end bookshelves. Another option would be internet direct (such as Ascend) with trail periods. For $600 you could also probably get a decent set of used towers to give you a little more bass if you don't have a subwoofer.

those focals are a good deal...but, cd player, turntable, fm radio? It's 2013. I would throw some of that budget to getting different source material. Stream itunes/itunes radio/pandora/spotify something.

Pushed the button on the Focals last night. I know our basement system is OLD as our receiver is a Denon DRA 550 and on the same entertainment center I have a laserdisc player! Now that we'll be spending more time down there I will replace pieces when I have the cash. Kinda short now as I've been finishing a room down there to turn into a brewery and the brew stuff is pricey.

Given that I just ordered the Focals what receiver should I be looking at next? May put a tv in the room but no seating for movies so 90% music and 10% football/baseball games. Anything at all in the $500 range?

Do you want a stereo receiver or do you consider expanding to 3.1, 5.1, or 7.1 in the future? Accessories4less has the Yamaha rx-a820 and Marantz 5007 for $499. They are both nice HT receivers.

Since can't watch movies in that room probably just do stereo. SWMBO has all her music on her iPhone and also listens to Pandora radio on it so would like a receiver that would make that easy.

One option for stereo receiver - is Harman Kardon 3490 receiver
And, a real good price

i have been listening to the "cambridge aero 2 speakers" for about 3 -4 weeks - im totally blown away by these

they have a bmr tweeter (balanced mode radiator) which was used in the nxt panels awhile ago but never took off

these are stunning speakers - the minute you hear them you will know that these are different from the traditional speakers out there

they are only $499 - i know audio advisor sells them - thats where i got them from

this is the best monitor speaker i have ever heard for this price - it sounds like it is $2000-$3000

i have posted my thoughts on "audiogon", "audio asylum". avs forum and "audiocircle" within the last 10 days

+1, that is the lowest price I've seen for it so far. I had been eyeing that for a long time before I got my Yamaha receiver (because people advised me to go for a surround capable receiver than a stereo receiver for my bedroom since I might want to put in a TV and some other sources in there that might need more HDMI inputs than a typical stereo receiver comes with).

Living room: EMP Tek E55Ti (pair) / Yamaha RX-V475 / Sony BDP-S3100

Bedroom: EMP Tek E5Bi (pair) / Yamaha RX-V375 / JVC DVD player

Will probably hook a tv to this to watch sports but notice there aren't any HDMI inputs on this receiver. I'd like at least 1.

See my comment above. I didn't realize you needed to hook a tv to this. If that is the case you must get a HT receiver. Something like a Yamaha RX-V375 should do plenty.

Bought the Yamaha Rx-375 tonight and the speakers came in today so I'm a happy camper. Haven't run any kind of setup but still sounds good on a variety of music. Also ordered the Denon DBT-1713 (for $299) from best buy but won't be in until 12/26.

Continue to enjoy - the Yamaha 375 can work for 2 channel listening.

Hey jroadie, how's the new setup treating you? I'm thinking of upgrading my Polk tsi300s in my living room to the Focal 706v since I really like the sound of the 726v in my theater room. The only problem is my living room has TERRIBLE acoustics, but I'm sure it would still be a significant upgrade. Room treatments aren't an option for the living room.

Oatmeal stout sounds good right now! I have some Deschutes Black Butte Porter in the refrigerator for tomorrow's NYE gathering at my house. Grilled wings, beer, Blues hockey, and college football round out a nice evening. Cheers!
