Guys,

I am trying to build a home theater for my living room in an apartment which is small

My limitations/specs

Room Size: 14*16

Budget: 500 (Can look for used)

Intended Purpose: Listening music-60% watching movies-40%

Prefer netural sounding.

I decided to go with 2.0(floor standers) for now and add on later as needed

Here are the options I have in my budget so far.

Boston Acoustincs A250 - $119 each

Cambridge Audio S70 - $139 each

Jbl studio 180 - $140 each

Used Energy CF-30 - $160 each

I stopped by the magnolia and really loved the definitive technology bp8020  but they are out of my price range :(

Do you guys have first hand opinions on these models and can help me choose the best ?

Thanks much!!

+1 for the Cambridge S70, at their current price they are a very good deal. Another good option is the Pioneer FS52 for $129 @ Best Buy/Amazon/etc.

Do you also need amplification?

The material of the dome have very little effect on the sound of the tweeter ,the important factor is the crossover.

Paradigm Monitor 7s, Mk III, used.

Here's a good looking example, though I don't vouch for anything in the auction, and have no information about it.

No that Sony is all you need, a receiver is a pre-amp and amplifier in one.

With $500 for a pair of towers, you could look at the Infinity Primus P363, Arx A3rx-c, and HTD Level 2 Towers. I would personally go with the Arx as they have been very well reviewed and offer fanstastic value.

Of course you need to listen to them before you buy to make sure you like they way that they sound. For a budget, Polk speakers are always one to look at - TSi400 or better yet the RTiA5 (used or on clearance). You should also take Transmaniacon's suggestion and go listen to those Pioneer speakers - all the rage in the budget market since they came out.

+1. Arx has amazing value and really great sound. Also if you pull the trigger soon you could get on the group buy and save $80 off normal price: http://www.theaudioinsider.com/forum/showthread.php?2057-2013-Arx-Group-Buy-Thread

You could add the A2rx-c later for your center as the next step. If you move into a bigger space or feel comfortable having more in your current space, you could pick up a sub and then A1bs for surrounds to complete the set down the road...

They are internet direct only, not sold in stores. You could try posting in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1429229/the-official-arx-owners-thread-a1-a1b-a2-a2b-a3-a5-etc
If there are any Arx owners in your area they may be willing to demo them for you. I'd be happy to if you so happen to be in the Boston area...

Definitely Focal Chorus 714V speaker is better is a 8ohm 91db Sensitivity easier to drive.

The WHARFEDALE have a lower Sensitivity 86db and are 6ohm.

Just because a speaker is easier to drive, doesn't make it better... I think you can't go wrong with either speaker, lot of good options at this price point.

How about the JBL ES90s? $250 each Or even the Infinity Primus P363 for $200. If those are too much, you may want to consider BIC

The Focals are out of your price range but at half price I can see why you are considering breaking the budget. I've only listened to Focal speakers once - one of the Chorus 800 series bookshelf 2-ways and I liked them - very "detailed" sound and bright in the highs, but that is what I like - reminded me of my older Paradigms with the aluminum dome tweeter. These floor standers are a 2 1/2 way speaker with an additional woofer to fill in the lows so they may be a little "warmer" than the bookshelf speakers. These speakers are in a whole different category than Polk or Infinity - you should try to find some to listen to before you buy, but at that price you wouldn't lose much if you had to sell them.

Of your list, I recommend the Cambridge S70's because they've got a matching center and surrounds that you can acquire inexpensively.

You can look at Infinity Primus although I think it is a downgrade from Cambridge Audio. If you are smart/patient and shop on the used market you can find Monitor Audio RS-6 or RX-6 in your price range and they'd blow any other comparable speaker out of the water for that price. I landed my RS-6's for $400 with no competing bids, but the center and rears both cost a similar amount. *Shrug*

You could check out the HTD.com level 2 or level 3 speakers. They are located right outside of dfw area (plano i think) so you could stop in and listen to them. They are ID normally but nice that they are located nearby you. They've gotten pretty positive reviews and are supposedly good performance for the price.

Well those are probably nice speakers, but at $750 each you more than tripled your budget assuming you bought new ones. Looks like the upgrade bug was in full control here - but you will probably be much happier with them than you would have been with the $250 towers.
