If you can squeeze another $49 (free shipping) - the Definitive SM450

Ignore their there so-called 24 hz bass - however, they will play down to around 50 hz

Those Infinity towers would be perfect for you. Highly doubt you'll find a better deal than that.

OK, so I've gone off and looked at all the speakers recommended and thought about needs and limitations.

I realized that bookshelves on stands take up the same space as floorstanding speakers and the wife is not going to be happy with either. If she is not going to be happy either way, might as well get the best sound I can?

Sooo, I want to spend between $125 and $150 per speaker and it has to be at Amazon.com.

As far as what I want out of a speaker - my first pair in college was a set of Bose bookshelves, which I loved. Until I listened to a new pair of Energy's I picked up. I realized how bass heavy and muddy the Bose's were.

I have not listened to a ton of speakers, but I thought the Energy's sounded really natural, I guess. They were very clear through mids and into the highs and were not harsh or bright.

So - the BICs are right in my price range:

http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-Venturi-Speaker-Version/dp/B00012F7CI/ref=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1383317772&sr=1-17&keywords=floorstanding+speakers

As are these Polks:
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Monitor-55T-Cherry/dp/B009WVKAXA/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1383315256&sr=8-11&keywords=floorstanding+speakers

http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-TSi300-Floorstanding-Speaker/dp/B0018QPSBG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1383317985&sr=1-4&keywords=floorstanding+speakers

Pure Acoustics:
http://www.amazon.com/Pure-Acoustics-Supernova-6-5-Inch-Speaker/dp/B0041T2VSU/ref=sr_1_21?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1383317886&sr=1-21&keywords=floorstanding+speakers

Would be really, really hard for me to justify going above $150/speaker.

Thoughts?

The thing about bookshelves is, $150 gets you a much better bookshelf than it does a tower. If you have a sub the end result is the same, so I think you have a lot more options in the $300/pr bookshelf category. The HTD Level Three and Arx A1b are both good choices at $300.

That's the theory, but not the practice (note: I am gonna push that up to $200):
The Pioneers certainly break that, with the towers often perplexingly *less* than the bookshelves.
Although the Infinity Primus 363 (on sale at Fry's $200/pr) is $60 more than the Primus 163, it is also much better a speaker.

Speaking of adding things: were you going to put your bookshelves on the floor? Stands are going to raise total costs too. Particularly stands which match your speakers and are stable.

I'm with zeig. I recommend the sm450 for 300pr. Although that's not on amazon.

Onkyo TXSR607, Mythos 8 Center, Studio Monitor 350's, Klipsch S-10 surrounds, Bic F12 sub

Stands do add to the cost, you are right. I still believe spending the same money on a bookshelf that is part of a nicer range of speakers is a good option.

Thanks for the input.

Bookshelves are likely going to go on stands which is part of what started me down this path. I'm looking at what that is going to cost.

I also have a young child who gets into everything, absolutely everything so stability of the speaker is important. What does a stable pair of stands cost? Hardwood floor.

I really, really don't want to go to $400 and they have to come from Amazon as I have a gift certificate for a good chunk of it.

The Polk RTI A1 seems a like a great fit and I think I can wall mount it?

Are they really going to sound better than a full size floor speaker? I know you all know a lot more than I do.

How important is it to get bookshelves off the floor?

Stable is relative and acceptable appearance is as well. I'll have to suggest google.

Wall mounting may be an excellent solution for you. Polk is a popular brand and may do well for you. I have no personal experience with those speakers, but I'll bet someone here does.

Neither "floor speaker" nor "bookshelf" inherently sounds better than the other.

Reasonably important. You won't get ear-alignment from the floor, and you are going to have issues with reflections from the floor at that distance.
