I'm looking at Christmas ideas for my brother. Right now he has some terrible computer speakers set up for his computer and Xbox. A 2.0 system. He listens to music movies and games on them. Pretty evenly. I'm looking to spend less than 200 total for a pair of speaker. Powered (active) I might add.

So far I'm debating between the klipsch 2.1 computer system which is $150. And the Fostex PMO.4n powered speaker pair. What do you guys think? I care more about sound then he does. So I'm sure he will appreciate the upgrade no matter what. But I want to get him the best I can for my price range. Thanks guys

I would consider a 2.1 system instead since he is watching movies and gaming.

The new Micca MB42x are supposed to be great sounding little speakers, combine that with a Dayton SUB1000 and Lepai 2020A+, and you have a good starter system. In my opinion this will best any muti-media type speaker set, and you get a lot more low end than you do with powered speakers.

I like the idea. But the 2020a doesn't have a sub output. Only 2.0?

Not an issue, you would just use the speaker level inputs/outputs on the sub.

This is how you would set it up:

PC (3.5mm output) > Lepai (RCA input)
Lepai (speaker output) > Sub (high-level input)
Sub (high-level output) > Speakers

Then you adjust the crossover on the sub to blend with your speakers, probably somewhere around 80-100Hz for the Miccas.

I highly recommend the Klipsch. I have them set up on my desk and have both volume and sub set at about 15%, using my computer to adjust the volume and they are often too loud at that level. The sound is beautifully rich and full. The sub kicks. However, since I don't own a gaming console, I don't know how you'd hook one up to with it.

Thanks for the review of the klipsch. I already have an idea of how the game console hookup would work

The Focal XS Book 2.0 are very nice desktop speakers that you now can get for about $250 on Amazon . com. There are a newer version that adds Bluetooth Wireless so these one are now at reduced prices.

I own a pair and are very happy with the speakers, but since they are fairly small there is no deep bass. There have been some criticism that the combined power/volume button but I have no complaints there as I have to push hard to turn on/off the speakers.

They do not have a headphone output so I use the inexpensive FIIO E10 Olympus USB DAC (review prev revision) that works great with my Beyerdynamic DT 880 250 Ohm and use the E10 line-out for the speakers. This version of the E10 fixes issues with loose headphone 3.5 jack.

Alvin thinking of doing the Micca speaker set up. But I think I want to get the mb42x. instead of the regular 42. Since it actually has a crossover. But will 20watts from that small amp be enough for them to sound they like should?

That should be plenty. I'm about to jump on the MB42x's myself for a simple PC setup with the 2020 t-amp (2013 version). Don't really game or anything on the PC anymore so I'll likely run subless for now. These things seem to be great for cheap.

Really Debating whether or not I want to jump on the mb42x. Or wait for something else to drop in price soon

They seem like a very good little speaker, I might have to grab a pair myself just because rolleyes.gif Black Friday is coming up soon and you may want to wait another week or so to see what deals will be going on. Generally this is a good time to buy electronics.

Good point! Forgot about that. I wonder if Micca would say anything about possible deals on the MB42x's. I'll e-mail them now and report back

Yeah please do! I am also anxiously hoping EMP puts the E56Ci on sale for Black Friday so I can finally round out my 5.1.

Yeah the e56ci is very nice. Looks killer!! I still have yet to get it to sound perfect, but I'm trying different things. At times I feel like I'm still hearing the ever so slightest distortion in voices (only at very random times; not an all the time thing), from what I believe is the tweeter. I've replaced the tweeter so I'm wondering if there's something else that's wrong on the x-over/wiring/etc or if I just have a good ear. I feel like the e56 is ever so slightly voice different than the e55's. I know it's not as efficient (about 2db's is what I've found), but I feel like it's a little different and that can collapse the stage at times.

That is interesting, I will definitely let you know what I hear if/when I get one. Does it come with rubber feet on the bottom like the E5Bi?

Edit: Sorry to get off-topic, I think the MB42x paired with a Lepai 2020A+ and Dayton SUB-1000 would be a great 2.1 system.

The small amp will be plenty for near field listening.  Wouldn't count on it to fill up a room from 12 feet back though.  This sort of setup is on my list for a pc build come next year :>

Though the Lepai is continuously getting hammered in reviews online from people able to take measurements on them.  From everything I've seen, you'll want to expect closer to 10 watts per channel before you get into distortion.  At the price point, something has to be traded.  The topping seems to get better reviews and feeds power better, but also costs more for the "same" amp.

And yes, get the mb42x over the original.

The Indeed uses the TA2021 amp as opposed to the TA2020, which puts out 2X25 watts.

I was referring more to the build quality between the Lepai and the Topping using the same 2020.

Unless I missed something though, no one brought up the 2021 chips?

Probably because I mentioned it in Brad's other thread. Hard to keep it straight since he has been running two different threads with overlapping topics.

The 2021 chip amps have a little more output. I've seen comparison measurements of around 3 or 4db difference (which makes sense based upon ratings). Could make a little difference if going with a low sensitivity speaker like the Micca. But definitely would cost more.

Ah, lol.

If it's only 3-4db, couldn't that change already be achieved in the 2020 by upping your ps to a 5 or 6 amp unit?

I think the Topping and Indeed amps for these chips already come with that, don't they?

IIRC the Lepai does not come with the 5amp power supply, whereas the Topping/Indeed do. You definitey need the 5amp power supply to get the most out of your t-amp. I personally would go with the TA2021, for $25 more you get the better power supply, a more powerful amp with lower distortion, and a much better build quality.

I think the Indeed amps look nicer, too. I did the same thing though. I bought my brother the Lepai and and a pair of RC-10s for Xmas a few years ago. He uses it in his office in his restaurant and loves it. Last year I got him the ODAC to update his motherboard audio for that setup. This year, he's getting the Indeed as an upgrade biggrin.gif

So the Lepai seems a better fit for Brad's budget. I'd say stick with that for now. Put the additional money toward better speakers.
