So with the new PS4 coming out, i've decided to spend a little on my first surround sound I've ever had. So I know nothing about it!

My budget is about 600 dollars for everything.(I know its not alot) AV+Speakers and anything else I would need. I would really like the best quality possible. And with November deals, and black friday at the end of the month I would love some help and suggestions.

Also I don't mind building a system slowly over time for a little more if that's necessary, as-long as I can get quality and a little bit of wow factor since I've never experienced it.

I've drawn a diagram of my living room layout with a few problems/questions. The dimensions are 20x11 and I am only going to use the center of the room.

1) I am on the second floor, I don't want my downstairs neighbors hating me. They don't mind it occasionally but maybe theirs something I can do for this?

2) I only wanna use the center of the room, I don't know if this can cause issues.

3) I heard stand-up speakers are better then bookshelf speakers?

So I did consider the energy classic 5.1 and if that would be the most simple move, just looking for most bang for my buck for Gaming, Movies, and then Music. Thanks all!

(Quick diagram below)

I would look into the Pioneer BS22 and C22 speakers. They are very well regarded, sound great, and offer a lot of value. 2 pairs of the BS22 for your fronts and surrounds, and the C22 center will run you $300. Spend another $100 on the Dayton SUB-1200 which is on sale right now. It is a good budget sub and will at least get you started. However in a room that size don't expect very strong bass (subwoofers need to pressurize the entire connected volume). If you have never had a sub though it will be a pleasant surprise.

This leaves you about $200 for a receiver, I would get a factory refurbished one from www.accessories4less.com The Denon AVR-1613 is a good entry-level receiver, it has Audyssey MultEQ room correction, which configures and calibrates your speakers and sub, and also has networking for streaming music.

This would be a good starter system. I recommend bookshelves over floor-standers because when you have a sub, and your receiver sets a crossover, it sends the bass frequencies to the sub and not the other speakers, meaning the lower extension of towers becomes negated. The end result is the same sound, but you can generally get better bang for your buck going with a sub+sat combo like above.

Would these Pioneers be better than the $99 polk 60s? I'm thinking about gaming set up also.

If you want to do a 2.1 system to start, then you could go with the M60s, but you are going to have to raise your budget to get a full 5.1 system with them. Keep in mind going with the Polks means you need to have the matching CS2 center.

Then you could get the same receiver, bump up to the Dayton SUB-1500 and grab a pair of those Monitor 60s. Later on add a center and some surrounds.

If you want to play - then look at the Jamo set

Intresting thanks alot for the reply and info, I would be lost otherwise.

So you think I should bail on the energy classics 5.1 for 300 bux and go with either of those options?

Option 1) Pioneer Setup

Option 2) Long term setup with polk speakers.

Are there specific wires I need, or accessories?

I would go with bookshelf speakers and a sub (however, a challange for an apartment)

HTD is a nice option
http://www.htd.com/Products/level-two-speakers/Level-TWO-Bookshelf-Speakers

I would skip the Energy, and I am not a Polk Monitor fan - your call

Those HTDs seem really nice, maybe I can go with a 3.1 setup for now.

My budget preferences are:

Cambridge Audio
Boston
HTD
Pioneer
Infinity (sometimes)

However, I can not speak for your ears.

So is HTD better then pioneer for that budget and can I mix and match companies without any issues? HTD sub is pretty expensive.

I do prefer HTD over Pioneer

You do not need to match the sub with the speakers - get a sub within your budget for now

What subs are you looking at?

If I was to up my budget a little and get the HDT Tower Speakers Level 2, either one of those subs and receiver would I be sounding pretty good and should still stay with HDT?

Also was considering Level 3 Bookshelf vs Level 2 Tower Speakers, I heard the towers have a noticeable difference in sound quality and not to mis-match Level 2 and Level 3 with each other.

I personally would get the Level Three bookshelves and a better sub. You get a lot more value that way because when your receiver applies a crossover to towers, their lower extension gets negated.

The Level Three bookshelf and Level Three center will be fine. The Level Three is a step above

So I thought hard and my budget will allow the following, if you have any ideas or changes let me know. This is mainly for gaming and I hope I can really feel the explosions and bullets while playing. All I need now is to find a stand for the speakers, HTD is out of stock.

^ ^ ^ Plain old copper speaker wire is all you need. 16AWG will do the trick in most situations. Buy the cheapest you can find.

Monoprice (link) is a favourite around here.

Amazon, Crutchfield and Parts Express are some places where you can find speaker stands

Also, at Stands and Mounts
http://www.standsandmounts.com/Speaker_Stands_Speaker_Mounts.aspx

Wire is cheap - so I tend to buy 14 Awg speaker wire.

You will also need a cable for the sub, also at Monoprice
get the proper length that you need
http://www.monoprice.com/Search?keyword=subwoofer+cable

The speakers and sub which you have chosen will be nice.

It just dropped to $179 after rebate. Doubtful it will go lower than that.

However, that JBL SUB150P you are considering also is a good deal at that price. The JBL has gotten lots of good reviews. My neighbor has the PSW505 and it's a very good sub at $179.

Another sub to look into is the Lava LSP12 that is on deep discount at $170. It had a good following at its regular price of ~$300. Here is a discussion thread for it: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1275777/lava-subs

It's all a best guess. I've only heard the Polk, but I would lean toward the Lava over the Polk. But I could be wrong that the Lava is better. Sorry I'm not more help that that.

But what I can say, and I think others who have studied those three subs would agree, is that all three are excellent choices in comparison to the many other subs out there in the same price range smile.gif

Bad reviews from where? Generally with electronics like that the very small % of people who have DOA issues are the ones writing reviews. It's a fine budget receiver and will work fine, you can save some cash by going with last years models.
