I'm struggling to find any definitive answers on correct modern 4.0 "surround" speaker placement.

Currently I have mine setup the same as 5.1 setup just without the center or LFE.

Is this correct for a modern 4.0 setup?

Yes this is correct. Your fronts will create a phantom center effect which can be effective with a single listening position.

I should have been more specific. It's actually the rear speakers I'm thinking about. I have them almost to 90 degrees of my seating but slightly behind and pointing towards me. The way they are "supposed" to be with 5.1

I'm not sure if some systems expect them to be more like a quadraphonic setup with 2 normal stereo pairs mirroring each other.

My Xonar labels the channels as LS and RS but does this definitely mean that games and blurays will work in this way.

I woud follow the same placement as you woud in a 5.1, assuming that is the content you are playing.
