Hi all
I am looking for some opinions for upgrading my speakers. I currently have a cambridge soundworks set up ( 3 mc300, s300 surrounds and a polk psw10 sub) running of yamaha v673. I also just purchased a used set of def tech promonitor 1000's. I have decided that I want to get a set of towers after listening to some at a local store. Given my budget I was almost all set to get a pair of polk monitor 65t for 150 ea before they went out of sock. Since Then I have done some reading and some how my budget keeps climbing:) I like what people are saying about the polk rti8 which can be had for $400 pr. But really like the look of the rti a5 and have read they are somewhat mellowed compared to the ? Bright rti8. These however are $800 pr. No where has these models for audition. Now given that my price range appears to be at $800 now and not as limited as $300, does anyone have any recommendations besides these listed. Of the speakers I did actually listen to I like the energy cf-50 best. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

+1

In my area on craigslist there are some KEF Q900's, Polk LSi 25's and Vandersteen 2CE Sigs all $800 or less. All in nice condition. You just have to be ready to spring when some good deals appear. I'm surprised none of those have sold yet.

There are lots available in your area; I like Klipsch & like the Quartets, KLF-20 & RF-3 set.

Looks like some Polks & many others available, best wishes.

Order three Fusion-12 flat pack kits from DIYSoundgroup.com. Those will totally stomp any thing you can find in that price point. Many people have said that these speakers would cost thousands at normal retailers.

These are fool-proof kits that you assemble yourself. They come with pre-cut cabinets that you just glue together. All you need are clamps and wood glue!

There is a guy that posted his Cheap Thrills DIY speakers bested his B&W 803's! Not only that, but these Fusion-12's that I recommended are a lot better than the Cheap Trills that he built!

Save yourself some money, and build these speakers. Chances are, you will never buy a better replacement!

Thanks for the info. I did check out those fusion kits but not sure I want DIY. I did find some nice finds on ebay. I may go for a set of polk rti a7 for $600 also has a cti5 for $100. Worried about size and driving them with 90 WPc. What do you think about these vs rti8 for 400. My other two interests at the time are klipsch synergy f30 or bic pl-76 for around $300. Last thought is just getting polk monitor 60 for $200. So those are my last choices. Any thoughts?

Yes, the Yamaha will not run into a corner and hide from fear.

I have RTi-a7s and you can drive them with 90 wpc, no problems. I originally drove mine with 100 wpc with no problem and they sounded good. However, I will say that they did sound better to me when I moved up in power but I was most likely imagining it. At any rate, 90 will drive them fine. I will also add that I'm happy with the a7s, I got them for the same price you are looking at and I think for that price you can't go wrong.

Thanks, nice to hear from someone who has those. Do you think much better than rti8. That's my other choice with regards to more on budget?

My understanding is the RTi-a5 is basically the newer version of the older RTi8. The a5 is the smaller brother to the a7 that you are considering. I was actually going to buy the a5 because they were something like $500 for the pair but then I listened to them against the a7 in a head to head comparison and I went with the a7s. To my ear the a7s sounded clearer, the a5 seemed muted or weaker somehow. So based on that, I imagine I would go with the a7s over the RTi8s.

Plus the RTi-A series looks better to my eye than the RTi series.

Hope that helps. Your tastes may be different than mine however.

Yes I definitely like the new series better for looks. Just thinking of budget. Speaking of. The a7's I'm looking at are used at 600. Did you get yours new? I've heard others getting them around that price and am wondering where? Maybe around this time of year. Wondering if I should hold out for new ones?

They were returns but new and in great shape. I happen to live near Crutchfield so I can pop into their store. They used to have an outlet center where they would put their open box and scratch/dent returns. Sometimes if they happen to have a lot of a certain item (say speakers of all different brands) they sell them at a great price to reduce inventory in the outlet. I happen to go into the store when they had a ton of speaker returns and I was able to get the a7s reduced. Another time I was able to get PSB Image T5s reduced. I have not seen them at that price new anywhere else but I haven't been looking.
