You might take a look at the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer speakers - they come in bookshelf and tower flavors and seem to be well made. Infinity P360/P361/P362/P363 (they're all the same design) get good reviews. Polk Monitor 60/70 speakers seem to get lots of love too. Find them cheapest on NewEgg.com. For the Pioneer speakers look on Amazon.

When all else fails - RTFM!

Hmm - never seen those before. They look very nice too.

I forgot these: http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/speakers/products/xrt52 They play down to 49hz down 2.5db - so a sub wouldn't be needed right away but they'd certainly be better with a sub. They are on sale right now for $399 shipped. I have some of their first speakers they ever marketed - the ERM-1 bookshelf speakers. Very clear sounds. I've also owned a pair of their Reference series ERT tower speakers since they first came out. If the XRT-5.2 is even close to the ERT's they'd be well worth the money IMO.

When all else fails - RTFM!

I would take a strong look at these: http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?products_id=67
Over your price by $39, but they look to be pretty nice.
