Hi guys, long time lurker but finally saved up some money for a surround sound setup and need some advice.

Budget for the speakers is $1000 or less and the amp I'm flexible on, say around $500.

I've heard very good things about the Polk speakers and they are a good price on Newegg.

I was thinking:

2 x Polk monitor 75t (front L/R)
1 x Polk PSW 505 12" Sub
1 x Polk Monitor 25C two way center channel

Now the rear speakers I am not so sure about, will a couple of the monitor 45s be good enough? I would prefer to have some floor standing speakers for the rear too but think that 4x 75Ts might be overkill?

Also, no idea what receiver to get, I have read I need to ensure it can supply 200 watts of continuous power per channel for the 75Ts.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, I'm pretty new to this.

Thanks guys.

Seems like you're set on Polk, you might be able to get more input if you post on the polk owners thread. Polk makes a lot of ultra cheap models and people who ask about them often haven't done their research about speakers so I think the polk question threads get ignored a lot.

I wouldn't spend more than $300 on a receiver. I would suggest the Denon AVR-1713 or 1913 from www.accessories4less.com depending on if you need 5.1 or 7.1. Those power values are arbitrary, any mid-range receiver will work just fine. Keep in mind, it takes twice as much power to gain 3dB of SPL. So the differences in power values between receivers is inaudible.

Take the extra $200 and add it to your speaker budget. You might check and see if the Monitor 60s are still on sale for $99. 4 of those and a CS2 center would be $500, leaving you plenty of money for a nice HSU VTF3-MK4, which would be a huge upgrade over that Polk sub. Another option for surrounds are the Polk OWM3, they are designed to be wall-mounted and would work well if you have that option. Going with the 65T or 55T (I believe its called) would be another option for surrounds. They only play limited content so I am not sure 4 75Ts is really necessary.

The rooms fairly big, not sure of the exact dimensions but about 25ft x 25ft.

Sitting about 10 ft from the TV.

It's mainly for movies and gaming, I rarely listen to music in my living room.

$1500 is my max for everything.. I was thinking $1000 for speakers and $500 for avr although if I can take transmanicions advice and get a good avr for 300 I can up my speaker budget a little.

For movies and gaming the sub is the most important part so spend as much as you can in this area.

fwiw, I also agree with movies and gaming your priorities ,a good sub is a must especially in your size room and also agree that over $300 for an avr is to much in your budget.that being said I would look towards accessories4less for your avr wants ( denon avr 1613 or denon avr 1713) then a nice sub in the $500-$600 range( rythmik lr12v ) and the rest on a solid lcr (hsu hb-1mk2's and hc-1 mk2 center) and then add a pair of nice budget bookshelves later for rears (pioneer sp-bs22's ,infinity p163's)just another option
