Hello,

I was looking for a soundbar, and had in mind the Sony HT-CT660 but after reading too many threads, i was considering re-using my "old" 5.1 receiver (a Yamaha HTR 5630 that i bought years ago, but my subwoofer past away)... so now

my questions are.

Will my receiver provide a good sound quality, potent enough when watching blu-rays and playing video games ?

if so; what kind of tower speakers can i hook up with the receiver ?

Thanks !

Sure! It won't decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio fund on Bluray, but other than that it will work.

If you were in canada, for $500 I'd say get a pair of Klipsch RF-82 from Futureshop while the Black Friday sale is still going. It's not often we can point to deals!

Remember, it's called "AV Science"!

You shouldn't have any real problems using an older 5.1 receiver. the sound should be just fine, even if there are a few newer CODECs that won't be supported.

As to speakers. The Pioneers are highly recommended in the <$500 ranges, and my personal experience with the Infinity Primus line has been very positive.

You receiver is 70 watts at 1 khz - however, you will have decent enough power to drive a
pair of towers - Look at the HTD Level Two towers
http://www.htd.com/Products/tower-speakers/Level-TWO-Tower-Speakers

The more speakers you hook up - the more it will drain the power supply.

MAIN, 1kHz, 0.1% THD, 8 Ω70W + 70W

CENTER, 1kHz, 0.1% THD, 8 Ω 70W

REAR, 1kHz, 0.1% THD, 8 Ω 70W + 70W

Ok,

Now i have to decide witch of the these one i will choose.

- I have found a deal on kijiji for 2x Infinity primus p253 /w subwoofer Vector bass 12 for 380$± (can probably negociate)

- the two kilpsh RF-82 from futureshop have good reviews, and some metigate ( http://www.whathifi.com/Review/Klipsch-RF-82/ ) but they are 480$ off....

- Two Pioneer SP-FS52 (in think i can get them for around 300$ in canada)

- and these two JBL look great but didnt find any reviews (JBL Tower Speakers (LOFT50) - Black - Pair).

Im looking for the most "wide range" speakers, not the loudess.

witch one sounds like the better deal ?

thanks again

Now i have to chose from theses.

- i have found a deal on kijiji for a pair of Infinity primus P253 and a subwoofer Vector Bass 12, for around 380$±

- the two klipsh RF-82 for around 580$ tax in at Futureshop they are 480 off each, but I have found one metigate review

- The Pioneer SP-FS52, i think i can get them  for 350$ in canada

- and i like to know whats about the JBL LOFT50, for 580$ tax in at Bestbuy.

What you guys would chose ? im really looking for a wide range sound to "not miss a sound" from the track.. more than a loud speakers.

Thanks again

well seeing as im running a much older Yamaha model, RX-V620, front speakers are jamo 707i, which i believe are rated at 200 watts at 4 ohms, yamaha center speaker and two small yamaha rear speakers and they sound great, i am switched to 4 ohm on the back of my yamaha for the front jamo 707i,s, and yes they crank. receiver doesnt get hot and sound is unbelievable, been running this setup for couple years now daily. i was told by more than a few people i couldnt run these 4 ohm speakers but turned out they were wrong, im a true fan of yamaha. only have had two receivers and both yamaha, thats how long they last. id try to find a good set of towers used, bought mine for $300.00 for the pair, they listed new for almost $800.00 apiece. if your a real music lover than youll never be happy with a cheap set. so a new pair for $500.00 or awsume used pair for $300.00 or $400.00, going to be a huge difference in quality. all you can do for new is read the reviews. but then reviews are like opinions and bu**s, and they both stick. thats just how i am, id rather pay the price for a good new set on a used great set. after all the new $500.00 set down the road are going to sell for maybe $200.00 used, doesnt say much about them. a higher end pair youll pay maybe $400.00 but then be able to resale them for $300.00 or maybe even the $400.00 you paid. check out ebay. you already have a great receiver so why not get speakers to match, by the way i also have a 150 watt powered yamaha sub-woofer, you can find them for cheap on ebay. either way good luck with what ever you choose.

If you can get the Primus 363's for the price they go on sale at...that's a good deal. The FS-52's seem to be liked for their price also. If you don't have room or don't want/need a sub for awhile the RF-82's might make you the happiest. Listen to whatever speakers you can if possible.

Are you opposed to bookshelves? You could do 2 or 3 bookshelves (front L/R or front L/R and center setup) and a decent sub. All depends on what you want to spend overall/down the road

Fluance XlF7 ...429...built solid...Primus 363's are lower quality...glued on speaker terminals and fit and finish. Sound great but The XlF7 is built solid and has 8" down firing drivers so you don't need a sub......They will drop to 6ish ohm so a decent receiver is in order.

Canada builds some great speakers(paradigm for example) while the low end Polk and Klipsch suffer build for price...IMHO.

Good luck

ok

heres my problems, i did not buy the 705 at the moment, I'm waiting a little because i'm moving in two week and i didn't receive my new tv. but im sticking with the idea of getting them the 705...

now... my setup will be

an 60" HDTV SONY KDL60R550A witch have no AV output (only optical) but an ARC HDMI port.

i only want a 2.1 audio setup.

i went to futureshop ask some questions, the salesman says me that i will hear noise at low volume level with my Focal 705 and there no way that is a good move to connect Good speakers like that to a poor receiver that i have (yamaha HTR 563)0... i believe he is not that wrong

so now, I'm looking for a good "budget" 2.1 receiver or something that i will be able to plug the toslink output from my tv to "that box" that connected to my speakers..

What should i do ?

Any new AV receiver will have optical input, so does your Yamaha 5630. Why don't you try it out first and then decide if you need a new receiver?

As far as a new budget receiver....how much is your budget?

That's the best (or worst) salesman story I've heard so far this holiday season! ;-)

Reality is that your new speakers are 89 dB/W sensitivity which is probably very close to what your old ones were. Speaker sensitivity would be the likely cause of what he claims and since there is probably no significant change, he's probably making a questionable claim with his eyes on your pocket book.

Don't get bullied!

Get the speakers, hook them up, and make your own evaluation over the period of a few days.

Retail sales do not seem to be breaking records, and if anything stuff is going to come down as the short buying season progresses.

The relevant question is about your existing htr-5630.

http://download.yamaha.com/api/asset/file/?language=en&site=usa.yamaha.com&asset_id=3314

Page 9 says that your AVR has a digital multichannel coax input.

Your Yamaha 5630 receiver has 1 digital coax input and 1 optical input. that means your TV can be connected to your receiver.

I would think that is good news.
