Audio
    Subwoofer Level
        Subwoofer: On
        Subwoofer Level: -10.5db
    Audyssey
        MultiEQ XT: Audyssey
        Dynamic EQ: On
        Reference Level Offset: 0db
        Dynamic Volume: Off
Speakers
    Speaker Config
        Front: Small
        Center: None
        Subwoofer: Yes
        Surround: None
    Bass
        Subwoofer Mode: LFE
        LPF for LFE: 120 Hz
    Crossovers
        Crossover: Individual
        Front: 40Hz

On the back of the sub, I have all knobs in middle position; Phase is at 0 degrees, and the Variable Notch Filter is OFF.
I used the Monster subwoofer cable that came free with the sub, connected to the Left input (I did not connect the Right).

The receiver configuration is result of the Audyssey calibration with the exception of me turning off the Dynamic Volume.
If you like and want Audyssey, then you may not like my tip - because I fired Audyssey, MCACC, YPAO and the like.

If you like Audyssey working for you - then keep him > however, I do not like the -10.5db sub level, and the front crossover should be 80 hz.

This is my manual set-up

Front crossover > 80 hz
LPF for LFE > 120 hz
Sub crossover knob set > 120 hz
phase > 0
notch filter > Off

Receiver subwoofer level > +1
Sub volume knob > 11 o'clock
It will vary depending on your room, between 9 and 12 o'clock average > if I need to adjust the
level (+/-), then I control it with the receiver sub level > however, I do not go higher than +2 in
the receiver, after that I control it with the sub. Note: once you set it up - you should rarely need
to adjust the volume, if it is blending with the speakers

Your option and call - maybe Audyssey will find a job at your house.smile.gif

Personally I use Audyssey only for HT (manually set the crossover to 80hz) while I use a manual EQ for listening to stereo music.

Some people like Audyssey for everything.

Some people only use Audyssey to get distance, levels and phase settings.

Also, after you calibrate using Audyssey it has an "Audyssey Flat" option - I prefer that over the standard Audyssey selection.

Just play around with it and see what you like smile.gif

I'm also trying to compare the E60 with the CBM-170se...I've owned the VS-260 which was a fantastic speaker I didn't want to part with, but I sold them after getting an offer I couldn't refuse...

So, how does the E60 compare with the VS260 in terms of SQ and presentation....and I guess I'll have to try out the 170's as well.

I also need a fairly efficient speaker...I was able to drive the VS-260 just enough with a nice T-amp crossed at 70hz...the 170se's should be even easier - not sure about the E60's.

The E60 is 87.5 db sensitive - not really hard to drive - they are close to the VS260 in the mids
and highs, with real good detail, definition and depth - the VS260 is a little better and smoother.
The 260 will go deeper and has more bass energy - however, the E60 can be crossed at 80 hz,
and will play below 55 hz.

There are only 2 left at Amazon.

Psychologically, it's hard to go down a level in speakers, i.e. from the vs260's to either the e60's or cbm-170se's. I had the 260's in a near-field setup, and I wonder if the e60's may even be better suited for that purpose...but the tweeter on the VS260 was sublime...i'd hate to lose that super detailed sound...but it sound like the E60's are close...what bugs me is the statement "the VS260 is a little better and smoother"...which to someone like me, can keep you up at night.

I still am wondering where the Ascend 170's fall into the mix...i have yet to read about someone who has listened to both speakers....we shall see

Do not want you to stay up all night - so, read this review
http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/bookshelf-speakers/boston-acoustics/e60/prd_397855_4290crx.aspx

The E60 measurements from 200 hz to 10 khz, is one of the best period (that would mean smooth).

The speakers use to list/sell for $1200 a pair - I prefer them over the Snell K7 ($1250 pair)

So, I pulled the trigger on the E60's...a guy on ebay was selling a used pair. Interestingly enough, the specs on the Boston website show a 90db sensitivity for these speakers, rather that 87.5. I'm excited to give 'em a go against the VS260's. Stay tuned

They were measured by HT Labs, to be 87.5 db - which is good for a speaker
that size. Have fun

I received the E60's today and listened to them for about an hour, setup exactly where the VS-260's were. These are great speakers and a real bargain for the price I got them. The E60's will definitely tide me over until I can find another pair of VS-260's.

Comparisons between the two:

I should start by saying the VS-260's have been the best speakers I've ever listened to...that said, the E60's are just a hair behind. The VS-260 had a slightly larger, more enveloping soundstage and a bit more high end clarity - but honestly, I think I'm nitpicking. It's only really noticeable on a few songs recorded at very high bit rates.

They are close - The E60 is a former flagship model - you made a good choice - continue to enjoy

Are the Philharmonitors on your candidate list?

That's a speaker I'd like to hear.

Very interesting price given their original MSRP.

For the heck of it, I threw them in the shopping card. MB Quart wants $75 shipping and handling. Are they shipping them from Germany? It would be an expensive demo if round trip shipping costs were necessary to return them.

They came out around 2004 - MB Quart has poor USA marketing for home audio

The speakers are heavy, around 26 lbs each - if I buy them, I can live with the shipping.

alphaiii is the one who may cringe - because he likes to play ping pong with speakers.
I think deep down, he wants to be a pro-reviewer - it is just that it costs him money.biggrin.gifsmile.gif

They can only be shipped in the USA

I vote for the Philharmonitors...I've read some prefer these to the Sierra-1's. There's a pair of B-stock for $699 shipped ;-)

http://philharmonicaudio.com/folio-me/html/Phil%20Pages/philharmonitor.html

Also, I think an AVS member has already ordered both the Sierra-2's and the Philharmonitors, so I'll also be anxiously awaiting his comparison.

That comparison/test will be subjective - plus his room and set-up is not ideal - however, his take will be interesting.

I have not decided - however, Sound & Vision and also SoundStage, gave the Vera speakers a good review - and they
measured nicely, even the center channel.

Cel -

Would like to know your thoughts on how the Indeed T-amps would do powering these MB Quarts...the speakers are 6ohm...I can't find the sensitivity

Here is a german review of the speakers...I'm getting fairly interested, but I don't know if I my Indeed amp can handle this speaker

The Indeed t-amps are rated rated to 4 ohms, so they should be fine with 6 ohms. If they are mainly for desktop use, the Indeed should work fine to drive it loud volumes. Even people who have owned the Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelves have found TA2020 t-amps to work well for that. If the goal is to say provide moderate background music in a bedroom, I would imagine that it would work well.

But yeah. Best to try to find out the sensitivity, just in case it's something really low, like those SVS bookshelves that were 83db.

Ziegl found this on the Vera VS 1B, which is the MTM version of the VS 05...rated @ 87 from 500hz+ I would imagine the VS05's sensitivity is either the same or higher...

For me, I would want something like the Sherbourn/Emotiva amp - MB Quart
recommends at least a 70 watt amp, for some reason >> however, I see no
problem using a lesser amp for nearfield.

**Corrected

I am very close to buying these speakers...I'm just concerned that my current Indeed amp won't give them the juice they need. I wasn't looking to spend much over $500 to begin with...and having to upgrade my amp as well is a little worrisome.

Ziegl, any chance you are going to hop on these soon...if they get a good audition, I think I will follow suit!

I am getting close - they should have the same sensitivity as the Boston VS260
