I just got a Yamaha HTR-3063 Home Theater Receiver.

What surround speakers do you all recommend?

I guess it probably depends on the size of the room?

I'll be sitting 10-12 feet away from my TV and I'd guess my living room is 12 by 20 feet maybe.

Thanks

$5000 !!??  Wow...

I don't even spend that much for a car.

No, we're talking a few hundred at the most.

I'm going by Best Buy to see what they recommend (and then I'll probably search on E-bay for some).

Thanks!

What advice do you expect when you fail to tell people what your budget is?  For someone with money, recommending something cheap is bad, and for someone who is unwilling to pay much, recommending something really good is bad.  What, exactly, are you willing to spend?  "A few hundred" could be 3 hundred or 9 hundred, and I assure you, the proper advice for those two budgets is not going to be the same, if the person is specific.

Yeah, it's my fault.. no problem.

I should have specified that I can only afford at the very most about $500 (and I'd prefer to spend no more than $200).

I realize you get what you pay for, but it's not a huge deal if they're not the best that's available.

Thanks :-)

One more question, and then I will probably leave it to others to reply, as I have not shopped for speakers in your price range in a long time.

Are you wanting a full 5.1 set of speakers, or will you settle for fewer speakers?

The thing to think about before you answer is this:  If you bought just a pair of bookshelf speakers, you could get much higher quality speakers for your budget than if you divide it all up for 5.1 speakers.  I personally would recommend auditioning speakers and noticing the differences for yourself between sets of speakers in your price range, and a pair of speakers in your price range.  If it were me, I would go for quality over quantity, but you may feel differently than I do about such things.

Here is an example of a pair of speakers that might be okay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RTi4-CHERRY-Bookshelf-Speakers-Polk-Audio-NEW-PAIR-/360804038210?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item540198b642

Your budget is not high enough to get a full set of those plus subwoofer, but a pair are within your target budget.

God willing, we will prevail in peace and freedom from fear and in true health through the purity and essence of our natural fluids. God bless you all.

If all you are willing to spend is a couple hundred...then a htib-Like system, like the Energy take classic or the mono price version, is about all you are going to get! Good? No... Better than tv speakers? Yes!

At that price point two other options for a complete 5.1 might be ...
- Pioneer SP-PK22BS set ($450). Big improvement over TV speakers, and the 5.0 speakers are good enough to warrant a sub upgrade later.
- Purchase the 5.0 speakers separately ($350) and get a Dayton Sub-1200 subwoofer ($129), or for a little more the Dayton Sub-1500 ($199).
(Prices are from Amazon.)

Many in the forums consider the Pioneer's to be one of the "go-to" budget speakers, and you can hear them at most Best Buy stores.

There are a couple of worth while speaker upgrades if you decide to expand your budget by $300 or so.

Or, there are some interesting options if you want to start with a 3.1 system (and either add surrounds later, or use some old speakers as surrounds).

I found my old subwoofer for a set of speakers I got years ago and I'm going to see how they sound (probably will suck).

Now I just need to find some 3.5 to RCA cables as this set of speakers is for a PC.

Here's a picture I took of the back.

500 is a lot to play with.
2 pairs of polk tsi100 from polk on ebay at $108 each, and a matching cs10 from crutchfield for $130 leaves him $154 for a sub.

I found a set of Yamaha Speakers on Ebay for $150.

I'll have to see if these are any good.

Well, then an option for you seems to be - just spend 200 bucks and just get something mediocre.

So - why are you here asking for recommendations?

I thought there would be a specific model that people recommended that would be in my price range.

Obviously I was wrong.

I think you made a mistake. Those yamahas look like home theater in a box speakers. Of course you'll notice a huge improvement over your TV's speakers. I've had a setup like that and I liked it. But that's nothing compared to the sound you'd get out of entry level "real" speakers. When I say "real" speakers, I'm talking about speakers with woofers that are 5 inches or bigger. Even these best buy speakers that are $50 per pair would be such a huge improvement over that yamaha setup http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-5-1-4-2-way-bookshelf-speakers-pair/8959098.p?id=1218957873370&skuId=8959098
If you bought them on ebay, that's probably an all sales are final situation, so enjoy what you have - like I said, it's a huge improvement over tv speakers and you get the fun surround effects. But if there's a chance to cancel the sale or return them, consider it. Going as cheap as possible, you could get a $90 polk sub and two sets of those best buy speakers plus one more set to use one for a center for a total of $240 and it would sound so much better than those little yamahas.

this is a lot better than that polk sub...

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629

or this

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1000-10-100-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-628

having said that you just bought a $150 system with a "sub" I wouldn't even consider upgrading the sub with that system as it is not worth it.

Open box here for 89 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290034R
Amazon has it for 99 right now, but the price fluctuates like crazy - it was $69 in December.

I can't speak to the quality of this sub - people here bash it routinely, but the amazon reviews are good and it has to be better than what's included in that yamaha package.
