Looking for a 5.1 speaker set for a budge of $300 to go with my Denon AVR-1713 receiver. . I've thought about the monoprice set but I am open to other options (preferably 5.1)..

Subtract the receiver part - then look at the speaker recommendations

I know that smile.gif

Most of those speakers listed will fit in your budget - and are the most recommended.

11'3" L x 9'7" W x 7'2" H
This is about half the size of my living room that I'm willing to use. It is mostly an open room.

Well go to that thread mentioned above.

The Polk RM6750 5.1 set-up isn't a bad setup in your budget
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290066
$169.99 with $30 rebate card. You can beat it for that price. I would get it over the parts express set-up

There are a couple of packages in the classified section of the forum also.

here is one, I have no idea if it is better than the polk package listed above...

The Polk RM6750 is better with is 3.25" drivers versus that ones 2.5" drivers so it allows for a lower crossover of 120hz and not the 130-150hz required with the tl-900

Those polks look really tempting for the price. Checked the linked thread and thought about this setup.

Bust your budget slightly and make up the difference by brown bagging it for a week and/or cooking at home for a while.

A basic system of a couple of pairs of the Pioneer bookshelf speakers and a matching center. (The 21 series speakers are the ones I am recommending for your budget).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=Pioneer+speaker&N=-1&isNodeId=1
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629

Then add the above for a sub.

This would be decent starter system and I think it could be a significant upgrade over what you have been talking about.

Not a bad set-up but its going to cost you $552.45. (almost double your budget) Much better improvements over the other systems listed. But even if you went with the Pioneer SP-BS22's as your front speakers over the towers that is a great system for the money.

Those Poineer's are the best budget speakers around right now!

Found out my local hhgreg has these pioneer spbs22 speakers for $50 each. The question is whether I should buy the spbs22 from hhgreg or the spbs21 from newegg for cheaper.

http://www.hhgregg.com/pioneer-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-2-in-box-price-for-each-/item/SPBS22
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117405

The dayton audio subwoofer has the same price and shipping on both amazon (same supplier) and parts express, so I'm not sure if it makes a difference where I order it.

I have owned both the BS21 and the BS22 > the BS22 is more open/clear, with better detail and definition.
It also has deeper bass and is more tight and controlled.

Your call

Listen to what Jim said smile.gif

However, were you still thinking the FS52/CS22 for the front, and then the bookshelves would be for the rear? Or bookshelves for front left/right and the rear? If for the rear, the benefits of the better speaker would be less noticeable.

It doesn't matter where you buy the sub, the order either way comes from parts express...

If you have the the budget I would go with the Pio 22's, by all accounts they are better that the 21's. I had the first GEN. Pioneers and I did not like them at all, tho many do. IMO they are very dark and laid back, the high end is really subdued.

I think the FS52 would be the last thing I buy in the set. I plan to buy a pair of bs22 and the dayton sub first. Then I would get the cs22 and decide if I still want the FS52 to replace the fronts.

I suggest that you get six of the Dayton B652 speakers, which will cost you a total of $120; $40 for each pair.

These are very good speakers, and you can use them for front, center and rear, and have one left over.

The price of these things is ridiculously low, but they actually sound better than most other speakers that cost under $200 per pair; amazing.

Stereophile did an article on them recently, which you can check out at their website.

Then buy a subwoofer. I suggest the JBL ES150, which you can get for around $150.

There seems to be a debate on whether the newer shipments of the Dayton B652 are of the same sound quality of the older ones. there was a bad batch that was defective, they had a wrong resistor or something on the tweeter crossover (if a resistor can be considered a crossover). However even now after the fix people are saying they do not sound as good as the older ones.

regardless they are not better than the Pioneers.

IMO the JBL sub has no advantage over The Sub-1200.

Yeah there is a big drop in performance when you compare the Dayton B652 to the Pioneer SP-BS22's. I was never a fan of the SP-BS21's but the SP-BS22's were a speaker I could live with.

The origional B652 has a 6 db drop in the lower treble, Plus lacking in the bass
and weak off-axis response.

Then you definitely need to go with the BS22s to match with the CS22, which you would need for the FS52s.

Just bought my pair of FS52 speakers and loving them. Also pulled the trigger on the CS22 and waiting for its arrival.

I'm thinking about buying my sp-bs22 pair as refurbished. Is there anything I should consider before buying a refurbished versus new?

I would just make sure there is a good return policy in case something is wrong with them.
