Hi all,

The more I read the forum, the more confused I am. My head is spinning from seeing so many brands and models available on speakers. So I decided to ask for help and let people know what I'm looking for. I'm not an audiophile - not looking to spend $5000 or more to build my dream system. Instead, I'd like to have a decent (maybe entry to mid level) 5.1 system that works well for TV, BD, video games, and occasional pop music (very little classical music). My budget is $500-$1000. My room is about 13X20. Sitting about 10 ft away from the 47" LED TV that hung on the wall. Since the room is not very big, I'd like to stick to satellite speakers if it's not too much of a compromise. I was thinking about a Bose 5.1 AM10, but some one told me that they're over rated and over priced. Could you guys recommend something?

BTW, I haven't thought much about the receiver yet. I'm using a Marantz NR4002. I'm leaning toward getting a new unit with more HDMI inputs and network capability. What should I consider here? Thanks in advance.

Dennis

Does the $1000 budget include a receiver too?

If you can tolerate bookshelf size speakers, the following would be a solid system for $675.

2 pair Pioneer SP-BS22 L/R front and surround: $200
Pioneer SP-C22 center: $100
HSU STF-2 sub: $375 with shipping

Do the bookshelf speakers come with stands? If not, where can i find some? Are they expensive?

They don't come with stands. Google them.

Here is a decent, budget stand.

mark62,

These HTDs look pretty nice! I like the cherry color more than the black ones, Unfortunately, it looks like they only have the black towers. Would it work if I go with 4 bookshelf speakers instead? What's you opinion on the in-walls they have? Are they equivalent or way worse than the bookshelf speakers?

What do you guys think about this subwoofer? The spec seems to be quite a bit better than the Dayton Audio Sub-1200, and only $50 more.

My understanding is that bookshelves and towers should pretty much always beat in-wall (in the same price range).

4 bookshelves would be fine... and better than in walls...
