Looking for bookshelf speakers (identical LCR) that actually go on a bookshelf as part of a wall unit. Would I need horn tweeters? Large room, floorstanding speakers not an option.

After reading other posts on this forum, seems like if on a bookshelf, then sealed or ported would be the way to go, however it seems that even some front ported speakers it is recommended to not put on bookshelf, but on stands. So, if I use a rear ported speaker it may still be ok (as long as 2 inches behind speaker)? I will be using a subwoofer. Some speakers use compression tweeters others dome tweeters with the horns. Strongly considering these two for now.

HSU HB-1 MK2 $159 each
JBL Studio 230 $399 pair

Other speakers I have read good reviews on with non-horn tweeters, but front ported would be Infinity Primus P163, Polk tsx220, Wave Crest HVL-1,...for mainly movies, tv, very little music. Bic Acoustech FH-65b are two inches taller than the HB-1 MK2 and will not fit.

Please advise!

The Hsu speakers are good, I don't know about the JBLs but I think they would be good as well. The port direction shouldn't make too much of a difference as long as the port isn't blocked. In a bookshelf, I think I would be partial to horn loaded speakers because maybe the controlled dispersion might not be affected as much by nearby reflections, but it isn't an optimal place for any speaker. With the Hsus, you can try them out, and send them back within 30 days if they don't work out for you. You will be out shipping though.

I love the JBL Studio 230s. This is coming from a guy who had the fantastic Studio 530s and still have the L830s. These Studio 230s are special.

Which ones did you like most? I'm guessing the 230s?

Denon AVR 1709 + B&W 683s floors + B&W HTM62 center + Energy ESW-8HG Sub
Yamaha HTR-6050 + JBL Studio 530 + Studio 520C

I also own the 530's. How do the 230's compare?
