I was planing on upgrading my front LCRs in my theater to Bowers and Wilkins 683s this year. I've got an AT projection screen that their sitting behind, so I'm going to get 3 matching towers. No compromised center channel for me smile.gif. Well it's about time to get them, and what do you? The new 683 S2 gets announced! So now I'm a little stuck. Should I jump on a fairly good deal for the older 683s, or pay a bit more for the next revision? Looks like the cost per pair right now is 1349.98 for the old, and 1650 for the new ones. So for 3 speakers, it looks like I would be saving about $450, which could go towards a new emotivia xpa-3 wink.gif So, any thoughts?

Also, does anyone know if the new speakers are going to be sold as a pair or separately?

The 683 s2 will have a decoupled double dome tweeter from the cm10. Less contact with the rest of the speaker reduces unwanted resonance giving better highs. The woofer cones are now dual layered and indented for better lows. With new speakers comes new crossovers! The s2 series will be cosmetically different too. The speaker will be slimmer and now a matte finish. The tweeter will have a built in guard as well. It still has the fst in the full Kevlar mid. I am excited about the new 683 but am a little disappointed in the new 684. I spoke with someone from b&w who said the sound is markedly improved on the s2, and he isn't the type to blow smoke. I was originally going to pick up the cm8 but am now going to get the new 683 unless I listen to them and they don't have the anticipated improvement. Keep in mind if you demo the 683 s2 when they first come out in march that they do take several hours of play time to warm up so they likely won't be warmed up when you check them out. If you go to Bby try to talk to someone who is magnolia certified. What will you be using to drive them?

I've got a Marantz SR5007 that I use to drive a 7.1 setup, but I plan on getting a dedicated 3ch amp for the LCRs and let the Marantz power the surrounds. Thanks for the info on the changes. That's pretty much what I had read, was the main point was a change in the tweeter, with some subtle changes in the woofer cones. I didn't even consider that there would be a new crossover.

Well, I was a little torn between waiting till march to listen to the new ones, or grabbing the current ones which I know I loved. So, I mentioned it to my wife, and she said if the ones you like are on sale, go buy them now. Couldn't argue with that! So I got the 3 683s setup in the theater last night, and they sound amazing! Just as I suspected, using a third 683 as a center proved to make such a full, seamless soundstage. Sounds move from left, center to right perfectly. Vocals are pure and clear. Can't wait to get that 3ch amp and really make these things sing!

Nice I'm in the same boat I just have a Bose 321 system now and have been to bb last few weeks listening to cm9, 683, and 484's I believe. The cost of the 683 are down to 674 from from 749 and that's 150 less than the new ones will be (825). Torn too. I'm a newbie to the whole audio thing honestly. If I get a pioneer sc-75 receiver do h feel like I need to get a amp like you are? What sub woofer did you get with your set up and other speakers do you have? Wish my wife was like yours she thinks the Bose 321 is just fine smh.

I have the 683's and love them. I was initially running them with a Rotel receiver and they sounded just fine. I upgraded to amp power twice and can tell you with a separate amp they really wake up. They produce a much larger fuller sound (plug in whatever industry jargon euphemism you'd like). One thing to keep in mind with the B&W is they show a nominal impedance of 8, but a minimum of 3 for the S2. In other words you probably aren't going to realize the best sound from most receivers which can't dig that low. I think a lot of the criticisms you hear about B&W products seem to come from people who run them with modestly powered receivers.

They have a pretty good return policy so if you just don't care for them you're protected. Pick up a outlaw amp next time they do a big sale and you'll have a big smile on your face.

I just picked up 2 683's at my local bb for 875 for the pair. Upgraded back to towers from my 5.1 Def tech mythos nine. The sound is so much fuller and amazing. Glad I jumped on the deal. On stereo it's two different worlds

Ya def.. 1 had a few small dents on the woofers and the manager dropped it from 550 to 399. The other 1 had 1 tiny dent so he knocked it to 475. Awesome

Most people don't know this but BB will.work with u on the price of open box or floor models. You do not need to pay the price tag price.

Everything is negotiable on this planet even they non opened boxes even the new series 2 600's when they hit the stores. Obviously the series 1 is where u can really make a splash right now discount wise. The new series with the gloss finish would look better in my room but I'm all about best bang for my buck too. Got a personal day on Thursday and gonna hit bb again

Got my683s and a HTM61 for 1500.00 for all 3 at BB. I went to 2 different stores to get a 683 from each one so that way I could get the best of the bunch. The center looks brand new and only 1 of mine has a small bump on the lower woofer if i remember correctly. And they sound SWWEEEEET!!!

Yea, I was thinking of getting the floor models when I bought mine, until I took the speaker grills off. Looks like someone let their kid press in the domes on all the woofers :-( So, I just decided that new in box would be best. Still was a great deal for the performance. As for my other equipment, I'm still using some old Logitech speakers and subwoofer from my college days. So that's the next item on the list. The plan is to get an svs subwoofer, and some more b&ws for surrounds. Haven't decided which ones yet though.

Lot of back and forth on whether there is a huge difference adding extra Amps to system. If I do get one I was looking at the emotiva xp3 amp to power the front three speakers then use my denon for the surrounds. But I'm going to wait for next year before doing that as I already dropped 9 k on those speakers and tv and will be paying this off for awhile lol. I was looking at the pioneer sc-75 for my receiver but decided to go with the denon both are really good receivers bang for your buck wise.
