I own it, and I know it has bass out-put below 30 hz - I even own a bass tone/level disc that
did come with the subwoofer.

No Sir! I am not discounting the Aviano in any regard.  I just decided to up my budget a little and go with the SVS.  The main reasons are that the sub has been spoken very highly of in its price range, they have a 45 day in-home trial with full money back guarantee, and the size of the complete enclosure is perfect.  I should have it in a few days, put the order in last night.

On another note, I went ahead with the CB-5s as well (sorry zieglj), but I am having doubts.  It does not sound as clear/crisp as it did when I heard them being demo-ed at bestbuy, using the same receiver as I own (denon x1000).  I hooked the speakers up via banana clips on speaker and receiver terminals, set the avr on 2-channel stereo and listened to various music and tv for about an hour.  Something didnt sound right.  I decided to do the Audyssey calibration with the denon.  It improved very little.  It almost sounds like the speakers are a bit muffled, and not as clear as I remember.  Do they need to be broken in?  Are there other calibrations necessary to get them right?   Also, I have to take the volume passed 55-60% to have normal listening level.  Are all of these settings related or did I just buy some junk stuff? (all returnable for full refund).

My recommendation is to return the CB-5s and get the Cambridge Audio S30. There's no 100% guarantee that you will like them better, but the Cambridge S30s are a better class of speaker.

If you want to be able to demo something locally, you could also try the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers at BestBuy. You might like them better. If you live in California and have a Frys, the Infinity Primus bookshelves.

Thanks Cel- The only problem is that I am limited to a total height of 9 inches.  This one requirement is becoming a thorn in the neck.  If nothing it all, I may have to raise my TV a little higher in order to accommodate taller speakers.  The 9 inches are the max height from the top of the entertainment stand to the bottom of the TV. :(

The Cambridge S30 I believe will fit this criteria.  The only reason I went with the CB-5s is that I had a gift card to use at best buy.  They are the same price of 199.99, and I could return it no questions asked.  Accessories4less (as noted/linked by ziegl) has the Cambridge at 199.99+shipping.

Good choice on your subwoofer

Also, I got my spl meter to further test the Aviano sub - since cel4145 seems to have
some concerns.smile.gif

Even Stereophile was not impressed with the Energy CB speakers, and they measure
more on the poor side.

The Cambride S30 is a nice speaker and real good for the price.

How long does it take for AC4L to ship something out?  Maybe I can purchase the Cambridge and test both side by side, and return the one that appeals to me less?

Is there a break in period for these smaller bookshelves or are they mainly for subs?

Order by 2 pm eastern, and they ship out the same day - as far as break in time >
well just give them 13.13579 minutes, and you are ready.smile.gif

I stopped by a local hifi store and they actually had the s30s in stock and on display. Heard them. Loved them. Ordered them from AC4L.

I'm contemplating my receiver now. The guy at the store (probably trying to upsell) said Cambridge audio has the best DACs in their receivers. Can someone explain what he means?

Rethinking the receiver - Please rank-
marantz nr1504/1604
Denon x1000
CA azur 551

Thanks!

Spending more on receivers is the least bang for your buck in creating an audio setup. Spending more for better DACs, even less. For example, see this recent Toms Hardware article where the reviewers decided during blind listening that a well implemented computer mother board audio chipset is similar in class to a $2000 DAC. You may not hear any difference between those three receivers if they are setup the same, and could even spend less.

So pick a receiver based upon whether or not it has useful features for you, and save the rest of your money toward a subwoofer. A subwoofer is a big driver and a big enclosure PLUS an internal amp. So you definitely get better returns on your money spending more on a sub than on a receiver. There is a noticeable difference between the best $300 subs and the best $500 subs. There is not much SQ difference between a good $300 AVR and a $500 one.

Ok. Now that I purchased the CA S30s, do you think that it would be louder at a lower volume with my amp?

Glad that you like the S30

The Denon X1000 should be fine

Agreed. The S30s will work fine with that receiver smile.gif

Thank you guys for your continued support. A few more questions:

1) I purchased some cables that terminate in banana clips on both ends. They fit perfectly into the receiver terminals. Will they fit into the backs of the S30s? Are there various sizes of banana clips?
2) Ziegl, what exactly were the mods you had done to your S30s? Cost? Recommended?
3) What type of receivers do you guys use?

Thanks again!

The speaker was crossover modified - however, Dennis Murphy is not doing any more S30 mods.

Thanks for that.  I am now waiting on the SVS-SB-1000 and the CA S30s.  Both show a delivery date of Wednesday.  I will hook them up and let you know how they pan out.

1) Should I run the audyssey as soon as they arrive?

2) Question to convert to 3.1 tho -  I dont know if this is something that is official, but is there a recommended distance between L and R front speakers where a center speaker is needed? My speakers will be on the entertainment cabinet, and they will be roughly 4 feet from one another.

You don't have to, but your speakers and sub won't be configured properly until you do. Should sound better smile.gif
