So I have purchased the sony str dn-840. So I am looking for a set of speakers tht would be compatible with this reciever. I have heard many. I do have some favs but they are 4ohms.
So my question is. What speaker brand would be best compatible with this receiver.
My budget is $1000-$1500.
A little background is my space size is 20'lx20'wx6'8"h. And it will manly be used for movies and gaming.
Thanks.

What speakers have you heard that you like?

If you like 4 ohm speakers you need a different receiver.

Whats the model number of your ML subwoofer?

Maybe I should state this as well. More or less name brands. Whether it be book shelf or tower I will have to determine later.

Some internet direct brands to look for would be HTD or Ascend Acoustics. Both allow for in home trials. So you can demo the speakers in your own room.

If you have any audio stores in your area you might want to visit one and listen to some other speakers

In and around my area are all box stores. Futureshop best buy. One mom and pop shop who specialize in pardigm.
So I have heard them all.
I have never ordered something like that online. Afraid of the shipping and possibly wrecking the speaker or losing cables.

First off speakers that are worth buying do NOT come with cables. If you don't want to order online don't. I have bought all my speakers online and had them shipped to me with no issue.

It seems that all you are looking at is small speakers. Small speakers equal small sound which isn't ideal.

Are you in Canada?

Yes I am in canada. And sorry when I put cables I meant the wiring inside.
I do want big sound. For movies and gaming. I have a projector in my basement with a 93 inch screen.
I am just looking for advice on what speakers will work well with the sony reciever since I can't get any real clarification online. Thought I could get some info on people that have used or still use a sony reciever or the one I have. That's all.

Honestly if a cable was to come loose during shippiing it can happen when its shipped to the store as well. Buying from a licensed dealer online gets you the warranty just the same if something is wrong.

Futureshop does have this set available

The polks are the ones I heard in store an I was not impressed. As for the engery. I have only heard the take classics an I did like them. The ones that you have posted were in box so didn't get a chance to hear their sound. But I did like the smaller version in the take classic. Hopefully the sound is just as good.
As for the previous ones you stated the HTD have nothing but great reviews. Maybe I will give them a shot since they have a risk free 30 day trial.
Thank you for the help.
Are their any others that you would recommend with my budget.

Definitely don't use 4 ohm speakers with that receiver. That said, I like Monitor Audio, Kef, Paradigm, PSB, Axiom, Ascend, and Aperion speakers. A few of these are Canadian making them easy to find so get out and listen to as many as possible as speakers all have a personality and have a major impact on the sound of your system.

Sweet. Thanks for the ideas. I might have to travel a further to be able to see those brands. But it will be worth it if I am find the right speakers.

I really liked my Cambridge Audio S30s with my STR DN1040... currently they are hooked up to my older Sony receiver which is dedicated for my turntable. I love the sound from these little speakers. If I was in the market for a 5.1 set up I would certainly look at Cambridge's other offerings.
