I think you should recheck the Tempest build and make sure everything has been assembled correctly. It's been tested by quite a few people and none have ever had a response like that.

There's a couple hundred of those out there and no one has ever said they didn't like the mids, or that they sounded 'chesty' like a couple people have mentioned on that particular pair you happen to have. So I'm thinking there might be an assembly issue.

Just throwing it out there. 30" distance on the 1099 is a tad misleading for the woofer section as that is approaching nearfield territory for that speaker. It looks like from about 700 and it that's actually quite accurate, and the shape of the low end is quite accurate as well, but it'll be bumped up a couple db is all.

Carry on

The low range on the tempest isn't a big surprise. The dual woofers of the 1099 and 228HT will smooth it out better. This is partly why I went with a WTMW arrangement in the end. But that 2khz dip in the tempests is odd for that measurement distance. The XO is 1300hz which looks in phase. I would agree something looks weird there.

Erich can you email me the schematic and I'll see what could cause that and then I'll possibly check it out?

we will definitely have tux look at the inside of the tempest to make sure stuffing is proper. From all the posts I have read I think its fair to say that the tempest compared to the noesis 228 for music is one sided. I don't think I have seen one person who have heard both that think there even. now we know that there is a big price difference between the two.

From everyone who had heard the 1099 including tux , they say its midrange is just special. don't want to put words in Tux's mouth ( correct me Ryan if I am wrong) but it sounds to me like the 1099 mids are in another class compared to his fusion 10 pure. 10-15% better reading between the lines. even his wife noticed right away that they were better then anything else in there house.

I know I want my mains to be like that. if I can get that from 1099 then I will buy them. otherwise I will buck up the money for joes 228.

The tempest measurements have a 20 dB swing in the mid range... that can't be right

I have made a couple of changes to the playlist. Joe wanted hotel California ( he's a sucker for the eagles) so its in and queensryche is to the bench. Still on hard drive. Also replaced happy feet with animated scene from nine. I have most of the famous scenes from Batman, tron, master commander, u571 , wotw, open range, etc. One day to go folks !!!

Ryan, what would be a suitable distance to have the mic at to take a measurement?

One thing I'll try today is to measure all three Tempest from the exact same spot, maybe something is off in one of them or all three of them.

Agreed, there's something wrong there. Not sure if the owner built their own cabinets or bought the flat packs or how much stuffing was used, but something isn't right to get that type of response.

We're down a pair of speakers so you could make the playlist 5mins longer if you wanted too. The Book Of Eli and an excellent shootout scene that I know a lot of guys have used at other GTG's. Maybe that would work? Or the shootout scene from Open Range.

Its a hard speaker to measure because of its layout. What you've done is fine IF the reader understands the woofers are down a db or two relative to the mids and tweet. It could also be making the little dip at 900hz more pronounced. Overall I can look at that and say, ya, that speaker is operating as it should.

The low range of the tempest is fine IMO. It's the 1 to 3khz range that looks odd. That might be an issue from measurement distance and mic location depending on how far up the woofer plays. It could also be a XO error. Were they per assembled XOers or user assembled? The low end raggedness is just the reality of a room measurement. The pattern tells me its a reflection. Doubtful its an internal cab reflection. Note, the audibility of this once seated at the LP will not be as it shows. And likely not measure that way either. There's a consistent reflection affecting that speaker. Like a floor.

Yes the crossovers in the Tempest were the pre-assembled ones from Erich. So I don't think it's a crossover issue.
I'll try measuring all three Tempest in the same spot to see how each of them compares to each other.

Maybe there is a lack of stuffing or perhaps the tweeter is inverted polarity, I don't know...

Polarity would affect 1300hz the most if Jeff designed the speaker as he normally does, which is with a strong emphasis on phase.

Stuffing shouldn't affect it that much. And the peaks and dips vaguely match the other speakers.

That said, my mic is totally different. and my room is treated up the wazoo and is near 100% symmetrical.
So it can't be used as a direct comparison... (it is what it is.)

Also, different DAC, different pre-amp, different amp(s).
Plus I have a 3-way passive/active XO mix (that shouldn't make MUCH difference though).

1200watts on each tweeter.
800watts on each mid.
800watts on each woofer <- needs MORE (the amp thermally limits at high-SPL)

Oops forgot to apply 5db "scaling" oh noes... it's the END of the world!!!!!!

I also just optimized my mid-bass active-XO by reducing the overlap by 50hz, and that seemed to make it more even (doh!!!)

Before and After, with appropriate scaling...

You guys are free to bring some snacks if you want too, I went and bought some cases of pop and water and forum member stsand has been kind enough to supply us with some coffee, cookies and sandwich from subway. So there'll be food for everyone just not a feast.

If things go a little longer and guys are getting hungry we could also have a few pizzas delivered to the house.
