Hey all,
I recently replaced my 7.1 HTIB speakers with the Polk TSX Line and a BIC PL200. Loving everything so far but I'm afraid of having to upgrade again. I bought 2 pairs of Polk TSX110b bookshelves which I love and will be keeping most assuredly.
However, I bought the TSX330t towers and TSX150c Center, the lower end of the TSX line from Polk. I've posted a bit in the 'Polkie" thread, but this is more of a general question as to what speakers AVS users recommend for a budget. I am a college student (IE. BUDGET) so I can't afford something like the RF 82 or RTIA9. However, I have about a week left to return the speakers and I'm still considering doing it. I got the speakers for a pretty good deal (new) at Bestbuy for $350 total - but at most I couldn't really afford to sink any more than $250 additional into this project. I really like the new speakers so far, but I don't love them and I could never run the towers without a sub. The center seems good actually (for the price) but I keep looking at other speakers (including the 550t) with envy.

Thoughts? What LCR speakers should I consider?

PS. I've been scouring craigslist/ebay just in case but haven't found much I love yet

I would go with a better version in the Polk line if you like that sound, specifically the RTi line:

RTi6 Bookshelves
RTi5 Center

There really isn't a benefit to having towers over bookshelves when you have a sub. Your receiver will set a crossover, and generally this is 80Hz, which is well above what most respectable bookshelves play down to. So your tower's lower extension becomes wasted because all it is playing is the content above 80Hz, something a bookshelf is equally capable of doing. So instead of going with a bigger version of what you have, go with something that will sound better, the RTi line is much better than the Polk Monitor/TSX speakers.

x2!!!

Polk offers some great deals through their Ebay store.

To OP- If you enjoy the sound of your setup currently AWESOME. As long as your ears are happy that is all the matters

What about these? - I'd just get the towers and I'd find a center later down the line. Never considered this line

I agree that having the sub negates the need for serious low extension on the speakers, but I kind of feel like the towers provide more depth. I dunno, I've always used bookshelf/satellites so I'm new to towers and somewhat like the look. I considered the Monitor 70 Series 2 on the polk ebay store for a while

Those would be an even bigger upgrade, but you can get the bigger LSi25 brand new for $1300 shipped, fyi:

Edit: Just saw that was for surrounds as well, still seems overpriced to me. Just note you will need to have a matching center, so this means trying to find one of the LSi centers.

Right, though the LSi!5s advertised were $650 (the whole set with surrounds is $1200). However, I may have jumped the gun - didn't realize they were 4ohm. Not sure my wimpy Sony STR-Dn1000 will be able to properly drive those beasts

Also keep in mind that generation of Polk LSi's are 4ohm speakers so that will require a serious receiver and maybe an external amp (also would need a receiver with pre-outs). So that would eat your budget in a heart beat

I strongly suggest the Polk RTi6's I have the RTi4's and I love them. I am holding off until a get my tax refund to purchase the RTi6's

Yeah you would need something more capable to power them, they really benefit from a healthy amount of power.

Another option is the Polk RTi10, you could just get the towers for now and then add a center down the road.

That's a fantastic deal, but shipping them would kill the value.

Yeah...I just wasn't sure where the OP is from. People need to put their location in their avatar or give it in the first post with things like this. Never hurts to get a shipping quote from the guy though. He might have some connections lol

Yeah very true.

Btw, did you get the issue resolved with your Denon? Send me a PM so we don't derail the thread.
