I am not sure where to put this as it's a general question, so please move if needed.

I have a brand new TV, speakers, ps4 and speakers. I picked up a copy of avatar 3d bluray but I want to reserve that for when I'm happy with my settings.

What movies, and maybe even more specifically which parts of movies do you play when you're testing new settings or components? Currently I've just been recording some random movies off HBO. Was really impressed with the sound and picture from Man of Steel and some of the surround editing from Resident Evil made my skin crawl.

thanks!

Olympus has Fallen, Washington monument scene.

Oz the Great and Powerful witch battle near the end.

How to Train your Dragon.

World War Z, grenade scene about an hour in.

Wrath of the Titans, most of the second half

Percy Jackson Lightening Thief, the last 1/4 in the labyrinth and with Hades

Most if not all of what is being recommended is for testing the bass capabilities of your system more than anything.

First off, I would stick to blu rays to get the real true sound and picture.

These are a couple off the top of my head I goto first.
Pod emerging scene on War of the worlds.
Art of flight, Ghost and Stuff by Deadmau5
Beginning of The Dark Knight Rises

2012, great movie and great sound affects! Iron man movie, great! Avatar, Battle for Los Angeles, batman series, all great sound track, hell, Disney movies have great soundtracks!

Disney really does it well all around. Nobody can argue the visuals in 3D, the picture and the audio.

My single absolute favorite video and audio experience demo is the 8th chapter of this:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ghost-in-the-Shell-2-Innocence-Blu-ray/4432/.

The soundtrack goes something like this: http://youtu.be/z64HCi2rQkE only in Full-HD with gorgeous visuals and lossless surround audio :)

I found the first 2 transformer movies bundled together in a walmart blue bin for $7 yesterday. Watched the opening scene from the first movie with trueHD and was thoroughly impressed. My couch would even shake. The pioneer speakers I got on sale for $320 and the bic f12 for $200 are more than I could have wanted. What's interesting as well is that my ps4 comes with a default setting of PCM audio, that can't be changed in the main menu settings, but only when a bluray is playing. It sounded pretty good with PCM, but when I figured out how to enable trueHD I was really blown away.

it's not just bass I'm interested in. I like the cool surround effects that a good horror movie does well. The ones that when you're watching alone late at night and you hear that noise in the right surround and it sends a chill down your spine. Bullets flying by in action movies are great too, but I like the creepy immersive feel that surround offers... if it was just bass I wouldn't even bother with the surrounds smile.gif

Oblivion has one of the best dynamic ranges of any movie out there, I would definitely add it to the collection.

Jurassic park had some good surround content. My wife screamed once when a dinosaur scretched out to the left. I was in the kitchen laughing.
Green Lantern was a good soundtrack, I think that was one I noted.
Rush was also good with the race cars.
The Conjuring was the latest horror movie and it was hair on the neck raising. Good surround and good bass.
I watched Eliysium last night and it was a bass fest. It had nice surround also with rocket ships and some good shooting.

thanks. I can't remember if I watched the conjuring or not. Eliysium was a disappointing story that had potential, but that was on my old system so maybe it would have been more enjoyable on the new system. Really enjoyed Oblivion, even on the old system. Rush is on my watch list, thanks for the reminder.
