£450 budget, £140 on the Yamaha RX-V475 AVR, £310 or so left on buying 5.1 Speakers.

I think I'm going to stick with the RX-V675 with Wharfedale DX-1 HCP 5.1 Speaker Package, then later on in a couple of months add Wharfedale Diamond 155 (or similar) floorstanders as front left/rights beside my TV so then it will be 7.1, then swap the centre speaker with a better one from Wharfedale. I don't think I can do any better than that.

So buying speakers then a couple of months later you're replacing them? rolleyes.gif

Buy quality stereo speakers rather than HTIB which you'll junk after 2 months

Why even bother post a thread you don't want advice you just want confirmation..

I'm hardly replacing much, only the Centre speaker to match the two floorstanders left/right I'm going to get but this is afterwards and not at this moment in time.

Specs can be deceiving, any speaker driver will play down to 20hz even a 10mm driver. The questions becomes how loud. You can play 20hz through a 10mm driver and hear it just fine. it is called a headphone, you just can't hear that 20hz at 3 feet away.

When you start using drivers less than 100mm they will not have much volume below 120hz but there specs might state they go lower. With smaller drivers you lose fullness of sound and dynamics and of course volume. For someone looking for small speakers something with ~100mm drivers will work fine if they do not want to play loud. That is why I recommend going with something with at least 100mm drivers. If you want to play loud you have to go bigger, no getting around physics. That's why you don't see Bose cubes being used at a rock concert.

Between the Tannoy and the Wharfedale, the Tannoy states it goes lower but again at what volume. There is only so much a 75mm driver can do, no matter how high quality of a driver. There are a lot of other characteristics of a speaker that attributes to its sound but you won't find them in most specs and that is why it is recommended to go listen to them if possible. Good luck in your search.

Do the Tannoy's really go lower? Wharfedale's at 120Hz-20kHz (Satellite) 80Hz-20kHz (Centre) go lower then the Tannoy's at 100Hz-40kHz (All Speakers).

Also the Tannoy's have a Cutoff Frequency of -6dB, in comparison to the Wharfedale's at -3dB. You don't often see -6dB, especially on good Speakers around this range.

I was advised on the -6dB Cutoff Frequency:

'The biggest problem is the lower bound frequency range (lowest frequency they can properly emit). The specs say that it is 140Hz, which is pretty terrible. And it's rated at -6dB, meaning that in reality it's even higher, more like 180-200Hz.'

Just buy speakers like Kef Q100 and similar sized/type speakers and they'll be able to reach <80hz and sound better than satellites with 3" or 4" drivers.

What you think of these? Up against the Tannoys or Wharfedales? For £300 it's a bargain for me.

You wrote the Tannoys at 100hz originally. But I see the specs say -6d at 140hz. My take on this is they are being honest. Again none of these specs say at what volume. With -6db at 140hz the speaker probably keeps the same frequency response as you turn up the volume. If you were to compare the Wharfedale Diamond which states 60hz with a 4" driver, there is no way it can play moderately loud at 60hz. I bet when you turn up that speaker the frequency response does not look the same at moderate or high volume as it does at lower volumes.

Specs do not tell the whole story and manufacturers rarely give enough information to make a good decision for comparison. Here is the facts. Speakers do nothing more than push air. A bigger speaker pushes more air which allows it to go to play lower frequencies louder. A 4" (100mm) driver pushes almost 80% more air than a 3" (75mm) driver. That is a big jump. A 5" (125mm) pushes 50% more air than a 4" (100mm) and so on. But, there is a limit to how big of a speaker we need and we use a sub to get the lower frequencies. Going to a 4" over a 3" is a big jump.

I just seen your new post. That seems like a nice system for the price. I don't believe the 65hz, again at what volume? But should be fine for a 100hz crossover. If you can make that fit your budget I would get that system.

It just skims the budget, of £450. I can get the RX-V675 for £140 with my discount but I don't think I'll get any discount on the Speakers from that place.

By specs, what would you go for the Wharfedale DX-1 HCP or the Tannoy HTS 101? (At this moment in time forgetting the Monitor Audio I just posted lol).

That's because they're second hand.

£180 a pair for the 10.3
£170 for the center
£170 subwoofer

about £700.

I'd ask for slight reducation maybe £450. That'll be better than a HTIB.

I think we've confused what we're looking at, there's no way I can get the one from AVForums, its way over the budget frown.gif

I can afford the Monitor Audio Vector's 5.1, but what you think?

I thought they were the 2000i range but they are 2000. I was still interested but can't travel nor can the seller meet halfway.

It's back to the Monitor Audio Vectors vs Whatfedale DX-1. I can get them both brand new at £300.

It's them two or the Tannoy HTS 101's.

Helppp!!

I've opted for the Monitor Audio Vectors, I don't think I'll get better than that. Those Q Acoustics are quite away from me I would have to arrange a courier and stuff to get them to me.

Can anyone suggest some Speaker placements from the images above please?

I've just purchased the Sony KDL50W829 also as mentioned above MA Vectors 5.1.

I was thinking the fronts could go near where the globe is, and the rears near that curtain rail there are two dots, with the centre on my TV unit.

The sub will either go on the left or right of the TV unit, so either of those small side tables.
