I'm putting together a basic sound system for a home theater to go with a Benq W1080st projector. Are these decent speakers to start out with? JBL Studio 1 Series Studio 130. Would start out with L and R channels plus a 120C center speaker and a subwoofer. No surround for now.

Do you already have a receiver?

I'm not keen on the front design but I'm sure they're good sounding speakers. I've seen many positive reviews for them.

I don't have a receiver yet but would buy a Yamaha 475 or something similar.

I own these speakers as part of a 3.1 bedroom set. There are the third best speakers in my house. When I bought them from New Egg, they had the pair for 149.00 and a free center...so essentially the same deal as right now!
how are they? Well, don't expect them to get loud or low, but for the price they are damn good...there is only so much a 4 inch driver can do! In a setting where I almost never get loud and rarely play music (in fact, mostly just TV), they are solid! I would call them pretty neutral, lacking a bit in bass, but what 4 inch speaker isn't and I have them crossed them at 80hz, but I doubt they hit too much below 70hz...

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

I just bought 2 120C's for two centers,, in addition to a pair of older JBL towers that have 8" woofers, and also just purchased the 150 sub.

You are going to be very pleased. :)

These can be had on the cheap at amazon!

From 160 hz, they will be 6 db down at 55 hz > that is good for a small
bookshelf speaker.

If one had the budget - you would get more realistic and punchy bass from
the likes of the Cambridge S30

However, this is a real good deal for the Studio 130 and a free center channel.
It can be a nice starting point for a lot of people.
