I'm very much a novice when it comes to audio. I'm wanting to set up a couple of speakers on our new outdoor patio. It's a 40' x 16' space. I would like to get two speakers and would love to be able to control with my iPhone. Also, if I can set it up to my indoor receiver would that be a better sound? I have a Pioneer VSX-521. If you really want to help me out, any recommendation for indoor surround sound speakers to go with this receiver? Any help at all would be very appreciated. Thanks!!

First I will mention that your outdoor speakers are going to need another amp.

The vsx-521 receiver will only be able to handle your surround sound set-up as its only a 5.1 amp.

Given your total budget of $500 here is what I recommend:
Surround Sound
-Polk Monitor 50's Series II, $200
-Polk Audio CS1 Series II center channel, $90
-Polk Monitor 30's Series II, $100

Outdoor Speakers
-Yamaha NS-AW350 2-Way Indoor/Outdoor Speakers, $88

So you do not have any front speakers at all - just the receiver and sub?

I had some from a home theater in a box set up but they have stopped working. So, yeah, just the receiver and sub. I'm open to possibly selling my receiver and upgrading in that area but my sub is pretty new.

For around $500 - indoor and outdoor speakers

I would look at 3.1 to start, and you have the sub

Look at 3 each of the Wave Crest HVL-1 speakers - 1 will work as a center

Then the HTD Outdoor speakers

Save up for 2 ea NXG Pro 4.1 speakers for surrounds

Thanks for all the great suggestions!! If I were looking for a different receiver, what would your suggestions be. The Pioneer VSX-521 is not super user friendly. I'd like something with an interface that is a little more intuitive. Would you suggest getting a 7.1 and using it for the home theater AND the two patio speakers OR should I use the VSX for the patio speakers and get a different 5.1 receiver for the home theater. I have a Samsung 3D TV and Samsung DVD player (not sure if that matters or not). Budget would probably be under $300. Thanks again!!

Good deal on Denon E400

Use Zone 2 from the receiver, to play your outdoor speakers
