I'm looking for a set of 2 bookshelf speakers under $400 to replace my current 5.0 setup. I'm moving to a smaller place and would like to have a higher quality stereo setup, especially given I don't notice the surround much as it is.
I would like to be able to grow these 2 into a larger set, eventually. Would prefer a large soundstage and "lively" sound. Not looking for towers or bars. Can be used or new. Would be a bonus if the speakers looked good.

Usage: 70% Movies/TV, 15% Gaming, 15% Music
Room: ~ 15' x 15' , speakers can be away from wall
Receiver: Marantz SR5007
Subwoofer: Rhythmik LV12R
Current Speakers: Dayton Audio HTS-1200B (http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-HTS-1200B-Theater-Speaker/dp/B000I7U1OU)

Options I've considered:
Aperion Intimus 5B
Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 SE
Ascend Acoustics HTM-200 SE
Bowers and Wilkins 685 v1
Chane Arx A1rx-c (once they're back in stock)
Hsu Research HB-2 MK2 Horn
Paradigm Atom Monitor Series 7

Open to other suggestions, thanks!

Hmm, out of those the KEF looks the most intriguing... how does it compare to the other ones I've listed?

If by "lively" you mean something with strong high frequencies the Arx and HSU should probably move toward the top of your list. I've heard the Arx and they do present a lot of detail in the upper range. Virtually anything with a horn tweeter (HSU) will have a lot of presence as well.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

The Hsu speaker is good, but the treble is not voiced hot. Not all horn systems sound like Klipsch. If you want a lively and crisp top end, I would be looking at Klipsch Reference RB-51s.

I suggest the Focal 705V speakers, which are only $350 per pair from Music Direct.

The Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 and 10.2 are also very good (and look very nice).

The Cambridge SX-50 are also good, and only $250/pair.

I personally like Monitor Audio and there are some good deals on the silver line out there. Another brand for you to add to the list is Axiom.

I for sure, would look at the Snell K5 speakers - you can move them to surrounds later
or, even sell them. - Snell for sure, made some good stuff.

Many good suggestions so far.

I would suggest you also consider something a little different: In that price range, look around for used speakers in really good shape. If you're patient, lucky, and/or persistent, you'll be able to find a pair of MSRP $800 or so speakers for $400, give or take. Look on eBay, Craigslist, USAudioMart, Audiogon, etc. It opens your possibilities up to even nicer speakers, like the NHT Classic Three, Ascend Sierra 1, etc., both of which can sometimes be found used in the $400 range.

Also, consider PSB B5 or B6. Both are over your price range but can be found gently used for quite a bit under $400.

For every new thing I learn, I forget two things I used to know.

Good find, afrogt. At those prices they're definitely worth considering if the OP wants new speakers.
Also, I saw a used pair of the B5's on Audiogon for $270.

For every new thing I learn, I forget two things I used to know.
