5.1 system for $3000?

I've got an old Axiom surround system, and I'm looking for a new speaker set. The house already has Paradigm in ceiling speakers for the rears if I decide upon a 7 speaker system - so all I really need are the standard 5.1.

I don't want to spend much over $3000 for the speakers, including a sub. (I suppose I could simply keep using my Axiom sub for now, if that would really open up better possibilities for the rest of the system)

This will be in a large basement room, with the HT in one corner. I'll be buying a new X series (2100/3100?) Denon receiver to run this.

Looks like I could get the KEF Q series for about this. Any other brand/series that should be on a short list? I have no speaker brand loyalty, and am hours from the city, so I'm not concerned about a local dealer - 'cause there isn't one.

The KEF Q series speakers are very good.

My top recommendation, however, would be a pair of PSB Image T6 speakers ($1300), a C4 center speaker ($500), and a pair of the B5 speakers ($500).

Add an NHT B12D subwoofer, which is excellent, for $800.

Actually, you can get the PSB speakers for a 25% discount at Saturday Audio (minor factory finish issues, full factory warranty new speakers).

I had the Image T6 speakers for two years; they were very very good (I replaced them with Vandersteen Treo speakers...$6500).

PSB also has a line of very good in-wall/in-ceiling speakers, if you ever want to replace the ones you have.

You might be able to find something like this for around $3,500:

RBH SX-61 x 5 speakers
RBH SX-1010N x 2 subs

Send me a PM if you would like assistance.

Here is one good possibility:
EMP Tek E55Ti towers: $700
EMP Tek E56Ci center: $400
EMP Tek E5Bi bookshelf speakers: $225
Reaction BPS 215 dual drive: $1500

Great setup which comes in under budget. You will definitely want to ditch the Axiom sub, btw.

Here is something interesting. I heard the towers a year ago at the NE GTG and thought they sounded great. Could use these as mains and get two more.

RAAL equipped Sierra-1's! Three for $1,200.00!

I like the idea of the seconds/blems. Looks like A4L has the KEF (Q900 fronts, surrounds, center would be $2300), but Saturday doesn't currently have any PSB Image. Does Saturday's inventory change frequently?

Are the speakers mentioned above all noticeably a "step above" the EMP Tek speakers? Looks like the tower/center/surrounds can be had from EMP for about $1500.

Probably because the PSB Image line has been discontinued. The (partial) replacement is what they call the Imagine X line. The PR spin is that they've loaded the Imagine drivers into the more basic Image cabinets. In reality, they were almost identical drivers anyway, so aside from a narrower lineup of speaker types, there is likely to be very little difference in how they sound.

If you like the idea of seconds, B stock etc., check out the SVS Outlet Specials. If you're patient, over time you can build an outstanding system for much less than the normal price. For instance, at the moment you can score a pair of Ultra Bookshelves, an Ultra Centre and an undamaged SB13-Ultra sub, all in black oak for $2850. Hold fire and add a pair of outlet Ultra Towers later on when they're back in stock and shift the Ultra Bookshelves to surround duty.

How larger is your basement room? Subs see the whole space, including any adjacent open areas. You may need to allocate more of your budget to subwooferage than you might think.

Which Axiom subwoofer do you currently have?

It's roughly 35 x 20 feet, with the home theater area in one corner, and a bar/ping pong table/shuffleboard table area on the other side of the space.

I've got an EP350 sub.

I would suggest no matter what sub you decide on, make sure you get two. You will thank me later.

I'm considering switching gears after my idea (to build a center speaker shelf into the wall so that the center speaker doesn't stick out past the wall) may be a bad one. I really want a clean appearance, and don't want a bulky center speaker visibly sticking out well past the tv.

So now I'm going over reviews of Definitive Tech Mythos 10, and using it for the front 3 speakers, and maybe the SR8080BP as surrounds. It looks like this set of 5 speakers would be around $2400 - and I would then add a nice sub.

I realize there have to be trade offs with a wall mounted system rather than towers - but I'm mainly using this for movie/tv watching, and really no hardcore audiophile music. If I went with towers, they would be pretty close to the walls - which I realize isn't ideal, but the married among us will understand. So maybe wall mounted are as good as "too-close-to-the-wall" towers?

For movie watching - and at a similar price - are there big tradeoffs between the Mythos and the PSB, KEF, etc at a similar pricepoint?

If I do go the wall mount route, what about KEF T305 series vs the Mythos?
