$500 to spend on Bookshelf speakers for music only

I am looking for the best bang for buck in the under $500 passive bookshelf speaker category. I have a music only setup. Currently have an orbit turntable, a squeezebox feeding a pioneer VSX-1018 receiver. I am using a pair of onix x-ls speakers but I am not real happy with their 2 channel performance. Just looking for something clean sounding that wont distort or fall apart at normal listening levels. Mostly listen to rock, punk, acoustic music, no bass heavy stuff. Looking to spend up to $500 but if there is something great out there for $200 awesome

Giving some thought to Chane, Ascend, audio engine and looking into others as well.

Whatever else you consider, I would compare it to the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers designed by Andrew Jones.

I would go to Best Buy, buy a pair, save your receipt, and listen away.

The Center Channel, SP-C22, also works very well as a large bookshelf speaker.

The Second Generation Bookshelf speakers are better than the 1st gen, however, the 1st gen floorstanding (SP-FS51) and the 1st gen center Channel (SP-C21) sound really nice. I own 4 SP-21's, and they sound great as a L-R speaker, I found them on sale for 49.99 each! ( I "only" used two, I bought 4 because they were such a good deal!)

Pioneer's Speaker Genius Hits Low Price Point

I have also read many good comments about the EMP Tek speakers, great sound, well built, very aggressively priced, although I have not heard them personally.

Also, I own 5 Axiom Audio speakers, purchased 9 years ago, and am very happy with them.

You can get the Axiom M3 v4 at their re-furb store, for 398.

I went to best buy, they only had one of the SP-C22. I bought it but am waiting to get another one. Is anyone using 2 of these in a vertical orientation? Will these perform better than BS-22-LR? Are they really as strong as other speakers in the sub $500 price range?

If you have a Craigslist (or a lot of garage sales) in your area, keep an eye out for some old Cerwin-Vega L-7 (or L-7B, black). They were a Circuit City special back in the day (CR rated "Best Buy"). Seven-inch German-made transducers, very efficient (93 dB/W/m).

Picked up a couple for $40 the other day to soup up Mom's LG 55-inch LED. They're certainly worth a flyer for that much. Would benefit from a subwoofer (as would anything "bookshelf").

I bought a pair of the Dayton B652 speakers for my den, and they are much better than the more expensive Boston speakers they replaced.

I am using them with a Cambridge 40-watt amplifier and a CD player and 60-inch TV, and the whole setup sounds very good.

Parts Express sells them for the unbelievable price of $40 per pair.

You won't find anything for under $200 that sounds better IMO.

For $349, though, you can get a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers, which are definitely better.

You can find articles on both of them at the Stereophile website.

Two additional options are the PSB Image B6 (close-out for $329 at Saturday Audio) and the Focal 706V ($499 at Music Direct, clearance).
jaeelarr and Transmaniacon like this.

Agreed. The Focal, PSBs, and JBLs recommended so far would be my choice.

Ok I just picked up a pair of the Pioneer SP-C22 from best buy. I figured I would give them a run through the paces. For $200 for the pair I dont have much to lose, will return them if I dont like them. VERY initial impression is they are better than the X-LS. Wondering if these will make me happy or if I should shell out another $400-500 for the focal 706V or maybe take a look at the golden ear Aon-2 or SVS for a little more and be done with the upgrading.

If you could stretch your budget by $50, it be very difficult to top the Swan D2.1SE+ for $550.

You can give the DefTech StudioMonitors a listen at BB Magnolia. If you like what you hear you can save some cash and buy them off eBay.

Lots of folks on here have purchased from there with no problems at all.

I would say either of these would be perfect for a music lover on a budget.

Bowers and Wilkins 686 S2 $550 a pair

Klipsch RB-61's $399.99 a pair

Polk RTiA3 $399.99 a pair

here are a few great options...

LSA .5 $499+s/h. check out audiogon.com. I have a pair and they are really nice, image well and are pretty balanced. You can upgrade to the LSA 1 which has a larger cabinet and woofer for $599.

Also, the Wharfdale Diamond 10.1 for $349 are a steal. Had a pair and sold them when I got LSA's. I was able to get my LSA's new for $300 as a closeout so I gave my Diamonds to my GF (still get to enjoy them when I'm at her place), but I would say the Wharfedale's are a little more fun to listen to. Maybe not as detailed but a little more punch in the mid-bass and bass. Again, look for some on Audiogon. I think someone is selling a pair for under $300.

Also saw a paid of new PSB Image B5's on Audiogon for under $300 and a pair of Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2's for $350 that used to retail for well over $500 a pair. You can also sometimes find the Mordaunt Short Aviano 1 or 2's for under $500 now as closeouts as well as the Monitor Audio RX1 and RX2's for under $500 now.

Another speaker to consider is the Kef Q300 or Q100. Accessories4less.com usually has them for around $400 (Q100) and $500 (Q300).

All of these are either slightly used, or new as closeouts and most initially sold for well over $500. Sorry that I'm not narrowing down much, but they're all great products so I'm sure they'd all work. If it were me I'd probably look at the Mezzo 2's or PSB's and then take the extra $$$ and start saving for an SVS SB1000 to add some bass. Good luck.

Buy used!!!! either on craigslist or ebay. Polk rti4 or preferably 6 will blow away the pioneer andrew jones bs22 which are usually considered the best cheap speakers and you can find them within your budget fairly easily.
They also look 100 times better and that isn't my opinion, it is fact.

You might need to call to order them.

OP, I would also consider the EMP E5Bi, excellent bookshelf speaker with a nice neutral response.

Thanks. I think youre right. They have phone order hours listed on the website.
If I have to call them I might as well see if I can save a few bucks. The B6s they have are listed as "Demo".

I am soo confused I always over analyze these decisions. SOOOOOOO many choices and not easy to hear any of them.

Maybe Arc? But they seem to be a new company and I dont really know anything about them.
Whafefale 10.1 sound like a decent option, but will they be a big upgrade over the x-ls or Pioneer?
Focal I just dont like the color that is on sale.
Maybe I will give some def techs a try?

I am looking for something a little airy and clear. The x-ls and the pioneers the mid-hi and hi end just seem too veiled and they seem to lose composure at very modest levels. I dont need an spl heavyweight. These will be placed about 4-5 feet from my desk in my family room and played at very reasonable levels I am looking for detail, I want to hear the cymbals!

So I just plunked down $350 for the def tech studio monitor 450s from amazon. I am going to give those a go and return the pioneers. I will see how these work out, hopeful from the reviews these will be my cup of tea.

Two more worth considering are the XTZ 93.22 and 95.24. The former is a really good speaker, while the latter is a really good speaker. However, that one is a bit outside your budget.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

The 93.22's are well within your budget.
