Made Mistake and Need Speakers

So I bought a Denon AVR X2000 and thought I'd use my current speakers until I could buy the Ascend Audio fronts, center and rythmik sub. problem is my current sub is passive so I need to buy a new one now. I don't have $1600 yet for the system I want. Anyone have good recommendations for a set that would cost around $500? I already have the receiver so i just need speakers.

I'm open to just buying a sub only but not a $500 one yet.

Then you need more than a sub - I would not use a new sub with them Samsungs

Can you stretch to about $600

Since you seem to have made up your mind for Ascend - then why not go a head and
get a pair of the 170 speakers - then use them as surrounds later
http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages...70/cbm170.html

NXG BAS-500 subwoofer
http://www.amazon.com/NXG-Technology...+500+subwoofer

If you can not swing the extra money - then look at this >>
The Cambridge S30 bookshelf speaker (they are real nice), with the NXG subwoofer

those sound great but what about a center?

the samsung center is so bad that my denon can't even detect it during setup.

This is a nice option

JBL Studio 130 bookshelf
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-130...jbl+studio+130

JBL Studio 120 center
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-120...jbl+studio+120

With the NXG sub - you will have a nice 3.1 system.

would you go with those JBLs or one of these sets? i'd buy 3 of the wavecrest but the level two may be too high. you've mentioned both of them to me before.

hi Josh, and welcome to AVS

I think you should take a look at what HSU has to offer. A pair of their bookshelf speakers... they have a B-stock pair for $324... very good speakers, IMO. Even without a sub, they are very capable for most music. They will keep you happy until you are able to add a 'real' subwoofer.
Better to buy quality pieces, one at a time, to build your system, than to settle for less all-at-once.
Ascend Acoustics also offers very nice speakers, and a path towards a very nice, and very capable full surround system. Point being, buy quality once, versus junk you'll want to replace.
Either option will be a huge step up from that Samsung HTIB..
Joseph

The white zone is for loading, and unloading, only. If you need to load, or unload, please go to the white zone.... you'll love it, it's a way of life.

The Ascend setup will actually be going in a different room. So buying cheaper is okay. It's going to stay in this room. the denon receiver may change rooms though. that's down the road though.

This is the system that I was recommending in another post which had a similar budget - total for all 5.1 speakers is $509 with shipping:

Front L/R Mains - Polk New Monitor 45B Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker Pair - $200 free ship
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290269

Center - Polk Audio CS10 Single Center Speaker - Black - $107 free ship
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1J70R68382

Surrounds - Polk New Monitor 35B Compact Bookshelf Loudspeaker Pair - $100 free ship
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290268

Subwoofer - Polk Audio PSW Series PSW10 Black 10-inch Powered Subwoofer Single - $102 incl shipping
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290034

If you can increase the budget $80 - upgrade the fronts to mid size towers - Polk New Monitor 65T Three-Way Ported Floorstanding Loudspeaker Pair - $280 free ship
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290271

Sub upgrade for $30 more - Dayton Audio SUB-1200 12" 120 Watt Powered Subwoofer
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...oofer--300-629

Another sub upgrade - although it may be too much to spend for a temporary system: Polk Audio PSW Series PSW505 12" Powered Subwoofer
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290130

2-Ch (HT L/R): Oppo BDP-105 BD, Adcom GFP-750 pre, Bryston 10B Sub Xover, Bryston 4BSST2, Paradigm Signature S4 v.2, (2) SVS SB12-NSD subs, AQ & Cardas XLR

I'd recommend:

Mains: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers = $79.95
http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bo.../ref=pd_cp_e_2

Center: Micca MB42X-C = $59.95
http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-...RR4WFJSKRSPKTG

Surrounds: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers = $79.95
http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bo.../ref=pd_cp_e_2

Sub: BIC America F12 = $184.22
http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F1...ZXEDKR9Z4WCS36

Total = $404.07 (Free Shipping on all items)

I've seen the Micca speakers recommended in several threads for people who were on extremely tight budgets. I have not heard them, so this is a "3rd party" recommendation. As for the sub, the ex-wife has it and I thought it was an incredible "bank for your buck" product. All of these recommendations are strictly stop gap measures for you as you realize that this is not the system you really want. With close to $100 left over from your stated budget you can buy some accessories, wire/cables/stands.

One other option that goes along with your "around $500" budget, and more people would probably prefer is the:

Pioneer SP-PK52FS Andrew Jones 5.1 Home Theater Speaker Package = $549.95 (Free Shipping)
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-PK5...oneer+speakers

The sub-woofer is the weakest link in this package, however all of the other speakers are highly recommended for those on tight budgets. The best thing about this option is you will have great sounding speakers for other applications once you buy what you really want for your home theater. In fact you could continue using the AJ bookshelves for surround duty when you upgrade the fronts/center. Just a thought. ETA: just found a review about this set as I was researching something else. The review is from Digital Trends: http://www.digitaltrends.com/speaker...eview/#!bdpduW

Hope this helps. Best of luck on your audio endeavors.

What passive sub do you own? You could power the passive sub with any external amp. Do you have a spare external amp?

I only use passive subs. I don't use active subs.

Hey, I'm in OKC too! The passive sub is a rattle trap and I want to quit using it.

Thanks everyone for being helpful. I'm torn between the following

SUB
Dayton Sub1200 $165
BIC America F12 $185
Polk PSW505 $250
NXG BAS 500 $270

Center
Pioneer C22 $96
JBL STudio 120 C $126
Polk Audio CS10 $106

Fronts
JBL Studio 130 $140 pair
Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 65T $280 pair (a bit steep right now)
Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 45B $200 pair
Pioneer SP-FS52-LR $254 pair
Ascend CM-170 $300 pair (too much right now. these would then be moved to another system later)

that is true. I'm mostly concerned about the sub. I'm trying to spend under $300 and get the best one I can but if the difference between the $185 BIC is minimal compared to the $270 NXG then the $185 would make sense. I read Jim's thread about all subs under $300 but way too much info to pick just one of those.

See if this will help you to decide - a nice sub for the current price of $270

Josh,

I'm in a similar situation with trying to decide. The AJ Pioneers are at Best Buy. See if they will set you up to listen to them in the Magnolia room. They go on sale quite frequently and if you can hold out you can get them cheap. If you like them and can hold out for a sale it will help you stay within your budget.

The JBL 120/130 is a good option in your price range...I got a pair of 130s and 120 center free on special from New Egg a couple months ago...all three for 100 bucks! Not the best speaker I have every or do own, but for that price...

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

I agree that a sub with your current speakers is useless.

If you have limited funds, I'd recommend using them for a good pair of fronts. Your receiver will split the center between them, giving you a virtual center. Better a pair of good speakers, and then add a center, sub, and surround as you can. With good speakers there's less need for a sub, though depending upon how you use the system you will probably want it eventually.

how would you rank the aforementioned JBLs, Polk, Pioneers or just using 3 Wavecrest HV-1s for fronts and centers?
I'm under the assumption

HV-1s
Polk
Pioneer
JBL

I would go with the JBL or HVL-1 speakers - they are designed and engineered to
sound smooth and balanced, in the critical 200 hz to 10 khz frequency bands.

so my amazon cart looks like this

JBL Studio 120c Dual 4-Inch Center Channel Loudspeaker (Each, Black) (Discontinued by Manufacturer) by JBL
$136.99

JBL Studio 130 4-Inch Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Pair, Black) (Discontinued by Manufacturer) by JBL
$139.95

Mediabridge ULTRA Series Subwoofer Cable (15 Feet) - Dual Shielded with Gold Plated RCA to RCA Connectors - Black
$9.99

Total $286

my wavecrest cart

3 HV-1 $335

and at amazon
Mediabridge ULTRA Series Subwoofer Cable (15 Feet) - Dual Shielded with Gold Plated RCA to RCA Connectors - Black
$9.99

$345

I'd assume the HV-1 system is worth the extra $60?

Speaker quality and sound signature, is not based alone on dollar value.

It is up to your button finger.

And that's why I ask questions. I can't sample either of these in person. Reviews are extremely positive for both. I definitely want the best quality and sound signature I can get for fronts and center totaling $350 or less. I spent $670 on sub and avr which I should have went less avr but I like it so far
